I used the magnetic tool to select gandaughter in these photos. Is there a better way to accomplish the selection of people?

You may want to try the "Magic Extractor".

It is the last item on the Image menu.

You still need to refine with some feathering.

If you don't have it I recommend getting Kelby and Kloskowski's book.

I don't know what I am doing. I just drag onto photo and resize and position then.

hard to tell w/o seeing the original that you extracted it from.
I find that if the object is distinct more or less from its background, the magic extractor does a pretty good job, and you can re-define its grasp as you go.

In my opinion you have a good idea with the best intent, But execution needs attention. Magic wand set at low tolerance plus set to 'add to selection' may be best available in your editing program. If you have an Adobe program with 'quick select ' — found in tool menu with 'magic wand' use that followed by 'refine selection'. Such is extremely good, will pull out the single fly-away hairs from of the background.
You might also give thoughts to blending the overlaid image so it doesn't look so much like a pasted collage. Such as; blurring near foreground and/or distant background — feather the edges of the import 1 or 2 pixels depending on file size — use commands for vibrance or hue and saturation. 'Kiki and the Penguins' for example is a saturated colour image slapped over what is essentially a b&w photo. Also look at bringing her feet down and behind the two flippers. For any future work in snow try kicking some snow over feet/shoes/legs using clone stamp at low opacity. If wearing long pants throw some snow dusting up as high as the waist where your subject might have it in reality.
You are in an area that can be real fun. Of course it is all a trick and lots of fun to hide the deception from the viewer by making the overlays blend.

PSE has a magic extractor that works pretty good and a bit easier. Go to IMAGE and it is the last selection. I've used it in some of my scrapbooking.

Drag image from corners only to avoid warping image.

Sorry to say you can, and likely will, distort the image if you drag it by the corner. However, if you hold the shift key down when resizing the image will be restrained to original dimension ratio. Be sure to stop the movement before releasing shift key.
