I keep seeing forum members referring to "bokeh". Could someone please explain what it is, how to get it, and when it might be wanted?
Just dumb it down for me.
Thanks guys and girls

It's a Japanese word for "blur."

Mad, welcome to the Hog.
Sorry, but I'm all bokehed out right now.
There was a recent Weekly Photo Challenge, that I believe was about Bokeh in landscapes. Look for that, or maybe St3v3n might be so kind as to add a link to the contest shots.
Those pics will be worth many 1000's of words! ;-)

The term "bokeh" has been dumbed-down so much already only dumb photographers use it. :-) <joke>

I would say it is the character of the image as things get out of focus. With good bokeh, you can still tell what the OOF stuff is, but it is not distracting. With bad bokeh, there are optical artifacts like non-circular light circles and odd edges which are distracting.

It's not blur it's how good the blur is! I like the blur my 135mm spirtone pre-set lens from the 1970's gives with it's 15 blade aperture. That's all I need to know. - Dave

There's a lot of noise in that blur... should we call this bokehnoise? :-)

Nice shot though.

Thanks Bret.
This helps, but brings up another question.
Is bokeh the same as DOF? That's what this photo brings to mind.

Bokeh is not the same as DOF, but it is related.

DOF defines the "thickness" of the band of acceptably focused region in front of the lens - smaller aperture leads to a thicker DOF.

Bokeh refers to the "quality" of the out-of-focus areas; how smoothly the various shapes and colors blend into each other, etc. Depending on things like focal length, aperture, distance to subject, number of diaphragm blades, etc., different lenses might have smoother or "rougher" looking out of focus areas.

Bokeh is outside the DoF...well out of focus. The bee is about 2 feet away at F13...not very much of a DoF with an 85mm macro lens.

That helped A LOT! DOF and bokeh are not the same. I am finally getting it.
Thank you so very much.
