What is the preferred way to send a camera to Canon for maintenance (no local shops)?

I assume you are referring to the best shipping method? I vote for UPS. Insured, of course. If you have the original box and packaging, plus a 2nd box big enough to place it in with additional protective material such a bubble wrap, foam peanuts, etc. If you have neither, places like Staples sell packaging material, or, what is probably the safest way: take it to the UPS Store and have them package it. Slight additional fee, but then it is on them if any damage occurs during shipping.

I do exactly what LFingar suggested and keep all the receipts, even the ones that don't mean anything.

GS, Why don't you just call Canon repair and ask them. If they have no idea, I'll be glad to give you my opinion!

Thanks for the replies, I thought UPS would be the best way, just wanted some other opinions.

Awww! Another religious split, Brown and Gold Vs Purple Orange and White. Of course you could go for USPS with insurance for 3x price of camera and hope it gets lost so you have enough for new body and a lens or two.

I got a better Idea.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to take care of the camera for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message or simply reply to this post.

MAYBE your local UPS is reliable. Maybe, but
My local UPS cost me $500 dollars on a shipment they claimed to have put "at my door", but which I never got, saw, or signed for. Beware. Pack like it was going overseas and ship it USPS to get absolutely reliable service.
