A retired professional. However most of my work came in my television news / sports career doing television news and free lance traveling sports work for ESPN, Fox Sports, etc. That was my income in those days.
Now I'm just a hobbiest who enjoys making photos that say something.

Add me to the no side. If you look at my equipment it looks pro. But I build retail stores for a living so I can do the photo stuff. I also spend a lot of time looking for deals on Craigslist and I have found a few. My passion is photography but my reality is I work for a living.
Love Your horse. The bird dancing was great.

I am certainly not a pro, as all can see! Wish I were, though.

It has been both one of the most difficult, but also most rewarding, professions I can imagine. My skill set has opened doors most people never get to walk through, and I'm grateful for that.
I think some earlier posts are correct, most of the contributors here are amateur, advanced amateur, or semi-pro. I don't read this blog every day, but have found it useful to keep up with the buzz from that segment of the market. I am sometimes appalled at some of the misinformation I come across, but I also find some of the contributors are surprisingly well informed. I occasionally pick up a new piece of information or a useful link. I think one thing that drives blogs like this, and our general fascination with photography, is that no matter how hard you try, or how long you try, you can never learn all there is to know about the field.
If anyone is interested, I launched a new web site for my photo business several weeks ago that sort of traces the trajectory of my career. If so inclined, check out

Great new site..love the shots of the Calatrava Design, Milwaukee Art Museum!
I didn't see 'Nikonshooter' or 'Captainc' in any of the above responses. These two contributors are obviously professional. I've been involved with photography (amateur) for many years but I always learn from their comprehensive, accurate responses.

After reading most of the thread 'I will never understand people's egos' I thought it would be fascinating to find out how many professional photographers frequent this forum?
For this discussion let's define "Professional" as anyone who currently earns at least 25% of their income from photography.
If you didn't know already I am NOT a professional, nor any other kind of photographer. I am still just a picture taker.
Hi RTR: I'm in the same position that you are, I'm a picture taker. Definately not a Pro... I'm reasonably certain if I tried to sell anything I have taken so far photograph wise I would have trouble eveb giving it away. That being said I am learning something new every day, that I hope will improve my photo's enough that some day I will be taking photo's some one will really want. We all have to start some where and I'm starting late in life. Just a wanted to say thanks to all the Pro's and very talented Amatures for sharing their wealth of knowledge with every one here at UHH. I'm glad you asked the question.

Not a pro - - never wanna have to work THAT hard !!
-
Have to work a day job to support my hobbyist addictions - which span computers, guitars, electronics, photography, and support of my wifes' crafting addictions (Bernina 550 quilters and Husqvarna Diamond embroidery as well as A1 quilting <sigh>)
-
Fortunate enough to be able to take Photos as a hobby - however subscribe to the thought that if you can make a living from your hobby and avocation, you'll never have to work another day in your life.
-
As far as the site is concerned: shucks - I only stopped by to take a look - - now I'm hooked: I've fallen and I can't get up - -
No pro here. I was the sports photographer for a local newspaper for over 20 years and have some other published work. I am retired now and have no desire to put in the hours it would take to actually try make a living at photography.

Hopefully when you see misinformation you are stepping and setting us right. Any time you get a group of people together with varying degrees of knowledge and skill you are going to get people who think they know more than they do. If you ever see me putting out something I think is right, but in truth is not please set me straight. I have been wrong before and I am sure I will be wrong again.

Hi Travlnman,
To me it sounds like you have some fair, good, great photos that someone, somewhere, would like, maybe even need, to buy from you, but you have stage fright and are afraid of those nasty little rejection slips that sometimes end up in someone's mail.
Forget all about those, pick up some magazines that have photos similiar to what you have, i.e. people, places, things, and write the Photo Editor, or the head man, asking for a copy of their "Wants List." Not the Stock Agencies. Go straight to the main source.
All it costs you to find out if you are on the same page as the Photo Editors is, at this moment, 44 cents.
Try it, you might like it.l

Am I a Pro? What is the definition of a Pro? You tell me.
A pro is simply someone who gets paid for his/her work. Basta. Has nothing to do with expertise, though one would hope it exists with pros.
