@ Knightmarian: Yes, please do keep us posted on your progress with this course. I'm sure we'd all like to know if it's worth the investment. Btw, I love your profile pic showing your dog. He's gorgeous! :)

Another option could be to join a photography club and do a course that they offer. Other benefits are competitions where comments and advice are given for each image, make new friends and able to "pick their brains" for all things photographic. A lot cheaper than NYIP. Depends what you want out of your photograhpy.
Hello Ted155! Yes, camera clubs are great!! I'm already involved with 2 camera clubs; one in Redlands, CA and the other one in Riverside, CA. Both clubs offer photo field trips and occasional seminars on various photo topics. Through my Redlands Camera Club, I'm presently taking a class in Photoshop Elements 10 and using the Adobe Photoshop book called "Classroom in a Book." I like the books that are put out by Scott Kelby better than this one, but that is the one my instructor told us to use. My Redlands Camera Club routinely has a 'Member's Night' every month in which we can submit 4 images for "critiquing." We also have routine Digital Print Competitions, where we can also submit up to 4 images. Yes, they are quite a bit cheaper than taking an online course & spending that much money. :-)
I am taking the professional course and I'm very well pleased. I like the way the course is prosented, all of my critques have been very professional and helpfull. Workshops are great, if you live within driving distance, if you don't thank of the total cost, the workshop, the motel room, the food, A lot of times this ends up more then what their course is. Another thing is that the course is not time constranied. I have 2 years to finish, istarted in March and have 2 lessons to go. Hope this was helpful.

Anybody here ever hear of the New York Institute of Photography? I am thinking of taking their course and am wondering if it would be worth my time and money. Any input is greatly appreciated.
I just enrolled. It is$28 for the enrollment and $45 a month for 8 months with the last month $10. Of course if you have the money up front it is $348, I just did not have it to spare in one payment. I should be getting my first kit any day now. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Knightmarin: Hope you waited awhile as the price drops and if you pay for the course up front they take more money off. But it looks like its too late as you are making payment to them. I guess you took the Basic course as the Pro (there words) is more like $700, if you wait for the first drop!
The really bad news is that there is a good chance you mite pay for this course again in a few years, and maybe again and again and again. You see that contract you signed can be sold even after it was paid in full. Seems funny who would buy a contract that was paid off. But it is a growing market for paid off contracts.
At some point after you make all your payment, they may send you the white top page with PAID IN FULL on it. But the rest of the contact (the blue, green, goldenrod and even a photo copy of the white front page) all can be sold to paper buyers and then the fun begins.
Hey youre in for a ride as everyone is working the systems. No one is going to be one your side. Even the cops will tell you to just pay them off. And then you wait for the next lawyer to call you up and it just keeps going around and around.
Oh forget the BBB, the cops; youre State Attorney General and the FBI.
I hear Cuba is nice in the summer
Good luck bro

IF you wait they will send you 1/2 off deals. I finally did sign up for the couse at the discounted price. It is very detailed starts with basic camera knowlage, much of what I did know but lots of good refresher info and some info I did not know or had forgotten that I did know. There are assignments with each lesson and feed back from an instructor (via e-mail) that is helpful. This has made me slow down a little and be more thoughtful with my portrait work. I have had comments from people that have noticed improvements in my work. THe most help has been info on working with digital formats. I took photography classes 25 years ago, all film, and I have been trying to figure out digital all by myself so I really did get some useful information about the digital format. I have definatly found it cost effective (at 1/2 price) :)

If they offer the deal at half off, I will hop all over it!
As a newbie to DSLR, I am already learning bunches. The fact that I can do this in my spare time and under no pressure from anyone, well...'cept me, makes me happy!

It happen to us. I did send NYIP a email about my concerns about what would happen to my contract after I signed it. They never got back with me. Buying old paper is a big business. Check it out
