Anybody here ever hear of the New York Institute of Photography? I am thinking of taking their course and am wondering if it would be worth my time and money. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I've heard of the New York Institute of Photography before. You can find their advertisements in most of the photography magazines that are sold in stores. I was thinking of taking the course at one point, but my finances couldn't justify it . I believe it's mostly an online course, but I believe you do actually have hands on practice as you do the coursework and then forward your work via email.

There is always testimonials from the former students on the written advertisements. Hope this helps you.

I just enrolled. It is$28 for the enrollment and $45 a month for 8 months with the last month $10. Of course if you have the money up front it is $348, I just did not have it to spare in one payment. I should be getting my first kit any day now. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

I took the course a few months ago. I believe there are two offerings: amature and professional. If I were to do it again I would definitely take the professional course. I'm not a pro by any means but I thought a lot of the information was pretty basic in the nonprofessional course. In both you receive several discs and can go at your own pace. Once you submit all the homework requirements yoy get audio feedback on each picture. It was worth the money but I would suggest you review each option before purchasing. Good luck!

I had a friend who took it. If you are learning photography, it probably is good. They give you assignments to help your learn about different techniques. The question is whether you need this type of structure to learn photography. That's really up to you. Maybe a local class would be good, also. You really have to depend on your needs. I've won award but I've never taken a photography class. Having said that, I was lucky as a teenager and had unlimited access to our schools darkroom and read a great deal. At the end of the year, starting as a total beginner, I received a citation as being one of the best high school photographers. The camera is a tool and you have to have a photographic eye. You can do this by looking at the endless number of great photos on the web. You just have to decide if you think its worth the money.
Take look at this site for inspiration:

good luck.

flytyer57, I looked at it too. still getting mail from them. I decided I didn't want classes on opening a business or running a studio. Why pay for something I will never use? I am learning a lot here and other photo sites. As for the assignments for projects, you can find some posted here and other sites. Than have an honest critique done here.
I would like to find a course geared towards what I want to learn. NYIP is not it for me, might be for you though. Good luck.

Hey Bud,

After reading the NYIP material and sleeping on it, I decided that I'm gonna stick with the book I bought - It is basically like a course as they have you do exercises at the end of each section. $25 is a lot cheaper than $1200. I'm to the point, age wise, that I will probably do some freelance and a lot of hobby photography. I will probably create a website to sell my photos and I already have that knowledge. I guess it's "6 of 1 and 1/2 a dozen of the other".

Consider attending a custom workshop or two to learn the needed photography skills. Calumet offers a range of workshops all over America.

I taught myself to do photography via the sheer effort of taking many pictures while learning from my mistakes. If I had it to do over, I'd take 2 or 3 workshops for the value of easing my learning curve and for gaining an earlier confidence.

From all the comments, I think I will hold off on spending the money for now. The community in which I live is only about 12,000 people and I'm not sure of any courses around here. That's why I was interested in online courses.

As for your pic, I never knew I owned a yacht. (my last name is Paradise)
