Hi! I've been shotting with a Canon Digital Rebel XT since 2006. I've opted for investing in lenses and accessories. I would suggest doing the same until you know what bells and whistles you want.

Canon T2I best camera for the buck

Yeah - - BUT - - she already has an XS. I don't think the T2i would offer sufficient additional capability to make the hardware thrash worth her while. The 7D would (that would be my recommendation even over the 60D). Again - if that expense gives her pause - then would recommend sticking with the XS and getting better glass.

Hi Everyone. The Ugly Hedgehog has become part of my morning ritual...I've learned so much. Today I would like to ask for suggestions for upgrading my "entry level" DSLR, a Canon Rebel XS. I'd like to stay with Canon, as I've purchased a couple good lenses along the way. I would characterize myself as an enthusiastic amateur, but can't afford to go to the professional models. What do you Canon enthusiasts suggest would be a good model to look for? Thanks for the suggestions. Linda Chaplin

You asked so here is my take. I'd look for a used camera. if you want a fancy camera for a smaller investment there are many professionals who are up-grading to the latest Canon has to offer and are selling their old platform. I started my kids (grown children) out on used camera's for pennies on the dollar. I have seen MarkIV's for less than a grand and these were freshly serviced by Canon. I bought my daughter-in-law (with her credit card) a 30D with a 35mm F1.4L and filters for less than eight hundred. If you do buy a used one from a "professional" wouldn't be out of line asking for a little help/instruction. might be worth more than you paid for the camera?...

How much are you looking to spend, and what kind of pictures do you take? I mean the 60D is a great camera, as well as the 7D, or the 5D mark111, So is the Rebel T3i, Also, what kind of lenses do you already own. Some may not work on the 5D as it is a full frame camera.

You may find the 7D to big, and the Rebel not has fast and sturdy as you would like. Which leave the 60D a very popular camera, because it's sturdy, price moderately, and fairly fast, but not to big. You can get it with the 18-135mm lens for about $1200.00.

As Rachel pointed out if you are thinking of moving to FF, make sure the lenses you have will work on that format.

As for an upgrade, I personally would not move from an XS to any of the rebel series, there really isn't a point to it. Your still moving to an entry level DSLR, I would look at the 60D or the 7D for brand new from the store.

If you are thinking of going the used route, 40D (love mine) or the 50D would be a good investment. I picked up my 40D used for $250, only 800 clicks. Came in the box, with the manual, neck strap, all the cords and wires still in sealed baggies, and unopened disks. Oh and also in the box, the sales receipt. :)

I used Canon Rebel and moved up Canon 7D. I still using Rebel XSI on as back up camera. 7D is fantastic camera,18 pix. 8 frame per second, larger and heavy at specially with L quality lenses. I use my 7 D in sport and wild life. It is 1.6 crop, but in landscape I use 24-70mm and 12-24mm with 70-200mm. with this kind of quality glass I do not know by missing anything. Portraits in my studio I use 85mm prime with 24-70mm. Macros with 90mm 1/1. I also have for my 7D 100-400mm to wildlife shoots. Canon 7D it is lot of camera.

When you point out the "used" route...how do you go about finding a reliable source for a used camera? The "D" series looks interesting to me. I don't really feel I need to move up to full frame. I have a 50mm 1.4, a 17-40mm, and a 28-135 at this time so. yes, it is more important to me to be able to use the lenses that I have than to move up and not be able to use those lenses. I'm a dedicated (passionate) photo hobbyist.

I met on used as, I had using my Rebel for about two years, but purchase as new, USA Canon.
I do not like to buy any cameras and or lenses as used.
I shoot with three Cannon cameras .
I did purchased ones Canon 70-200mm L IS lens as a used,
( listed as mint condition), but returned it on the next day.
Personally I do not think camera frame will improve big difference on your images, since you have that Rebel at ready.
Lenses is where the difference will show and the skills to use them. That 12" behind you camera will count at most I would say.

60D vs 7D would be my recommendation - of course I'm partial to the 7D. Someone suggested that the 7D may have a revised version coming out soon ??? if so the older style 7D (? Mk-I ?) may become available at a discount? (pure rumor and speculation?).
.
Folks swear by KEH for used equipment - and although I've not gotten stung as a buyer on E-Bay (they HAVE hosed me as a seller) - there is some risk there. I have seen folks here on UHH hinting they might have a 7D available, as they wanted to move up to the 5D Mk-II for professional reasons. I would always want to know WHY someone was selling the camera body - - buying from someone here on UHH who was a frequent contributor would ALMOST seem like buying from a friend ??

You are right. I bought a used 17-40 mm lense from an UHH subscriber and established a friendship in the process. Linda
