Linda, If you go to Lensrentals.com they have a T2i and a T3i in stock, as well as, many of the line up to and including the 1D Mark IV. I have a friend that wasn't satisfied with his Xti and tried the T2i, but settled finally on the T3i. I is taking fantastic pictures with his 100-400 Canon lens. I would suggest that you give Lensrentals.com a try and you will find your answer to your satisfaction for a small investment. I have used them often and that is how I made my decision on my last two major lens purchases.

Good luck.

How about a "tweener"? Canon 7D, possibly with a battery grip. Price is not ridiculously high, but the camera is good enough for most pros. It shoots 8 frames a second, very good low light performance, and good video capability.

I have a Canon XTi that I love - a friend of mine had the XTi also and upgraded to the Canon T3i. The only real difference she could find was the T3i takes better night time shots as the ISO is much higher. And going from 10mp to 18mp makes the day time photos just a hair sharper but you have to really, really look to see it. Since I don't take very many night time shots, I'm staying with the XTi.

I just went through this same delema.I had, and still do,the 450D . I was torn between the 5D and the 7D,and decided on the 5D MK I .The reason for me is that I choose the full frame platform. Also ,video did not appeal to me ,but may be a selling point for you.

Wow. All great help here. Thank everyone for your expertise and for taking the time to respond. I have a lot to think about now. My XS does take great photos and I am slowly building up my collection of "good" lenses. Linda

Jim H and Jay Pat have the right idea. Is there a reason you want to upgrade your camera body? Will the T2i, T3i or 60D give you something you can use that your present camera doesn't have. If there is not reason to upgrade the camera body, you might want to consider a new better lens than what you are presently using if there is a reason. If you really want to upgrade, then determine what improvements each of those 3 bodies will give you.

Remember the f/stops here!

Best, J. Goffe

Depending on your budget, The 5d m2 will be replaced soon and discounts are out there. Going full-frame with increased sensor performance makes this discounted model a great buy. Chances are the replacement will be a nice up-grade in performance and cost.

Linda:
No doubting the 5D Mk-II is a great camera, but I think the 7D would be more appropriate in your situation, as only your EF lenses would work with the FF 5D while ALL of the lenses will work with the crop-sensor 7D (EF and EF-S). Also, the 5D Mk-II is about $700 - $1K more (this may drop after the Mk-III replaces it in April), and aside from the 5D being better at landscape photos and offering ridiculously high ISOs, IMHO the 7D has a bigger bag of tricks to offer the serious hobbyist.
I am not sure that moving to a T3i, 50D or 60D would give you enough additional capability to justify the $$$ spent over what you have now. Also I doubt you would ever get what the camera was worth by selling your XS - - would consider keeping it as a back-up, or as a second in your bag with a utility lens afixed to enable grabbing a photo of opportunity rather than missing the shot to time spent changing a lens?

In contrast to Mr Markos' 2 posts following this one - I think you would gain quite a bit of capability upgrading from your XS to the 7D. Just my opinion though - -

The XS is a really good camera. The only reason to upgrade now would be to get a Full Frame sensor. So IMHO stick with the camera you have and master the basics, and save your money till you honestly need a more powerful camera like the 5D.

The other part of photography is post processing also called digital darkroom. Learning to post process will make a huge difference in your images.

Thanks so much. So many great contributions. I'm happy with my XS...thinking a camera upgrade would offer more in the way of ISO possibilities, but I'm not really interested in the video aspect so I don't think I need the video bells and whistles. I work in Elements 10 and have been honing my skills in that aspect of post production, too. Thank you again, to everyone. Linda

The 7D will let you go to ISO 12800 (special function) but is pretty grainy there - however I have gotten quite useable shots at ISO 3200 and above. Also the 7d has a great multi-point auto-focus and will shoot 7 - 8 shots per second full RAW plus JPG. It is significantly more weather-sealed, and has an 18MP sensor. I also like the Q-Menu system where I can show, scroll through, and modify all the frequently used functions on one screen. The video option is nice to have - I have used it on occasion, but video cameras are more convenient for that purpose. For me, I'd rather have a great DSLR that can do movies than a video camera that tries to double as a still camera. And I'd prefer to only carry one - not have to carry both.

IF you are satisfied with your XS - then by all means invest in better glass !!

Why Linda! You now have an Avatar !!

Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, I finally figured out how to get a photo up! It's actually one that my six year old granddaughter snapped, but turned out surprisingly well!

Now we are getting somewhere. Linda, look at the T2 or T3 (no i) and you will get your improved ISO, burst speed as well as a few other nicities! Notice neither camera does video. Disadvantage is Canon on sells then as kits with the 17-55mm plastic lens. This would be a good direction to go.

Please remember the f/stops here!

Have fun, J. Goffe
