Tried a flash today

Tried using a SB28 with a waterbottle on the end and a sheet of paper to get the light in the correct place. Photo 2 is straight out of the camera with Darktable. The last one I sharpened and upped the exposure a bit. The bigger of the heads is 6mm. iso 100,1/125, f/11, manual flash 25%, lens at min focus distance. Nikon D700, 100mm macro lens. Handheld.

I want to get closer, so I'm going to look into some automatic ext. tubes even though my 100mm lens is a manual one.

I also tried cooling a beetle today. During my set-up, it woke up rather quickly and ran under my foot to it's demise. :(

A Snoot/what you basically have here/ restricts and directs the light too much. If you like to build your own check out this link and look at the 2nd and 3rd and 4th set up. These are build from card board and you can use paper towel over the end as the diffuser material. Hope this helps. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-4.html

There is really no reason to re-invent the wheel. Profit from our previous experimenting, and eventual discovery of softbox diffusion. Take a look at several macro illumination set-ups on pages #4 & #5: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-4.html

A $15 FotoDiox 6x8-inch softbox diffuser is quite popular among macro-photographers: http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Speedlight-Speedlite-600EX-RT-Panasonic/dp/B003Y30334

I'm not reinventing, I'm just pretty excited about getting closer to the results I'm looking for.
