Still practicing with my Sigma 150-500, and am curious on thoughts regarding this one. Particularly thoughts on DOF (shot wide open f6.3, 500, 1/320, ISO 800). Slight PP in LR5, and cropped. Probably not much of a "story", but caught in the act of showing off.
I like it...particularly the shallow depth of field. Nicely focused bird. Did you crop it? Look how it's little claws are wrapped around the branch!

Thanks. Yes, it is cropped. Hopefully not too much.
Very nice Jtee. Love that you've captured this guy while he's talking. They do seem to do that quite a bit. I've tried photographing these in my swamp, but they're quick, and I only have a lens that goes to 300. They are wary ... it's hard to get close to them.
Love the composition. I like that you caught him on a branch. (It's hard, they don't stay in one place for long. He's got plenty of room on top, and I think you've cropped the photo in a pleasing way.
The bokeh color is gorgeous, but I notice you had a bit of noise. What was your ISO? I think you had plent of DOF, but the tail feathers are a little soft. Shutter speed? Nicely exposed, however, and you even got a little catchlight in the birds eye. I think that's important in making the bird come alive.
Just out of curiosity..was there more space on the sides? And, maybe just crop a little more down from the top.

I liked how you captured those claws too.

ISO was 800. I'm not sure if that or the crop caused the noise, but I noticed that too. Shutter speed was 1/320. You are certainly right in that these guys don't sit still long. Thanks for commenting.

Yes there was more space on the sides. I liked the vertical composition a bit better so opted for this route.

Great shot! Well done to get one sitting still long enough to focus. Great position/pose on the bird, squawking as usual. I do find the image very noisy and not as sharp as I would like to see. Nice composition.

Excellent vocalization pose...evokes essence of a territorial male RWB; exposure and focus good, good use of DOF. needs more "gaze space" to right, as well as some crop from the top. Close inspection of the download reveals noise of the high ISO, but it is not at all intrusive at NVD (1.5X diagonal)

Welcome to the world of the long lens and birds. The longer focal length and excellent optics certainly improve the pictures. I agree with all the favorable comments. My only quibble is with the cropping. Too much blank space above and not enough to the left or bottom. You cut off that "V" of the branches and it seems incomplete.
Thanks all for the comments. I have assumed the noise resulted from a combination of the high ISO (800, although I thought that acceptable for the 6D) and the cropping involved. This was not shot with a "traditional" tripod setup. On a tripod, but tripod in my lap in the seat of my truck (only another photographer wouldn't laugh there ass off if they had seen this). So some movement may have contributed as well. The cropping comments are very enlightening. I had liked the cropped composition until all of your comments pointed out areas of weakness in that regard. I have re-cropped the photo, and frankly, do in fact like it better with the suggestions. Thanks again for taking the time and offering your critique.
