Why Did I Do That?

I just received my latest lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II. As I unpacked it and examined it, all of a sudden I wondered, "why did I buy this lens?"

I already have the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, so I have the complete focal length, and then some, and the new lens isn't any faster than the other, so other than the form factor (it's much smaller), why did I buy it.

Oh, maybe the form factor was it. Maybe this will become my "walking around" lens.

We talk about random purchases at the G.A.S. Support Group meetings all the time. I think the answer here is "Return it for a store credit to use on something else!" :-)

Fred, welcome to the Hog!
I hear people here refer to their lenses as, "collections"!
not so sure it's about need or not.
I'm sure in the next year, you'll have said, "why did I buy this?", at least a few more times, and so, your collection will just grow. !
But just remember, that here, you're just preaching to the choir!!

And this type of thread will continue for ever with 'oops I did it again...'

Did not even read the damned thing, not interested.

Yet you took the time to make a sarcastic reply. Why bother?

I like it for its flexibility. I don't like it for its heft and weight.

I think that's why the 18-55mm appealed to me: It's more "natural sight" (24 - 70mm on an FX) -- slightly wide to slight zoom.

And it's surely lighter and smaller to tote around.

We are all guilty of GAS whether we admit it or not. I sold all my old lens at a trade in trade up session at my local camera store. Now that I have some money I simply must find something to need. There must be something I can buy for a couple hundred.

We all have made choices that had us questioning our own judgement. The quote live and learn sometimes does not work.
We live but we don't always learn. Having said that, go enjoy your new lens.

So, today I'm carting around my "day pack" that contains the 18-55mm mounted on my D7100, and the 55-300mm close at hand. I have the entire focal distance at my disposal with the two lenses. I think this is ultimately what I was hoping for.

Because most of you are little boys with a problem - need constant stroking and you beg to get same.

I got the 18-55mm when I bought my D5100. It's a great walk around lens and takes very sharp photos. Nice and light.
