I keep either my D800 or D7100 in my truck and I carry my RX-100 on my person. I also keep a tripod, monopod and camera bag in my truck. I don't leave my home without my gear.

Where exactly do you park your truck?? ;)

Since you are a Nikon guy, I carry a NIkon Coolpix P7100. Its a point and shoot that can shoot in RAW. 12MP I think, but it also allows me to control aperture and shutter manually. Its a few years old now, so they probably have a newer model.

I also have a D800, and aD7000 as a backup camera, but sometimes just don't feel like taking them on short outings. The P7100 works in those situations. I would never carry it into a low light place however.
Thanks for the suggestion. Low light is definitely a possibility.

No temperature concerns or problems?

Currently I have three Nikon bodies, see my signature line, and want to have a camera with me every day. Way too much trouble to take it into the office along with all the other EDC stuff. Also depending on the weather, too hot or cold, depending on the season, to leave it in the car.

Suggestions?

You want a small camera that takes good quality photos, right? Do you have a cell phone? Some have very good cameras, rivaling the point and shoot cameras. Another option is a u-4/3 camera. Much smaller and lighter than Nikon FX or DX and good lenses are available. Or a SuperZoom camera. All will take good photos at a fraction of the mass/volume of the DSLR.

I too carry a camera. It's a real hassle carrying a DSLR but now and then you get a shot that makes it worthwhile. You also learn a lot about your lens.

The Sony RX-100 seems to be the D800's "kid brother". :-)

I always carry my Sony RX100, either in my pocket or in the car (it's hot in Florida!). It never fails to take great pictures. Here is an example straight from the camera in "Superior Auto" mode. I just pointed and shot.

I have a great bag and I keep it on the floorboard out of the sun. I crack the window a little (rear window on a Tundra) and my windows are tinted heavily. Sometimes I add a blanket over the bag just for extra protection. It may get to 90 degrees at the most.

Thanks David. That's what I want to do, but I worry about temp extremes, particularly summer temps, damaging the body and possibly lens. What's your solution for that? Do You depend on the camera bag to provide temp protection?

An easier solution would be "Quit goin' to work"

I have an Olympus p/s with a belt carrier. it is no bigger than a cellphone but takes much better pictures.

Be careful of the P7100 upgrades. The p7700 dropped the view finder. The P7800 put an EVF back on but dropped the flash CLS.

other than these caveats, either the P7100 or P7800 make an ideal travel surrogate for any Nikon DSLR. I had an electrical outlet (always ON) installed in my trunk so I can keep the P7800 there full time with a spare battery and accessories.

I have a Nikon Cool Pix which I keep in a case on my belt for those times that I said "Gee, I wish I had my camera with me".

I bought a Df for just that purpose. But any small camera would do such as a D610. What makes for the best everyday solution is the lens, I have an older 35-70 f2.6 that is much smaller than the current 35-70 f2.8 it also has a handy macro function. The Df does well in low light so I rarely need a flash. No compromise on IQ I usually have other gear with me in the trunk, but that is my walk around every day gear.

There are hundreds of good P&S cameras you can carry in your pocket, or in a little case on my belt. Getting a good image is better than missing a great image.
