I am a painter and a computer graphics artist.
And I'm planning to buy a digital camera very soon.
I want to use my photographic images as a basis for my paintings, drawings, and computer-modified graphics.
Can you please give me your recommendations for the "best" digital camera to buy for $100 USD or less?
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all very much.
Larry
$100 will get you a used lens. Then you will need to decide what camera to attach to it.
I have a Fuji 4mb digital that I bought for $96 several years ago. I'll sell it to you for $25 plus shipping. Actually, the photos are not half bad, but it does take AA batteries.
If you are just going to use the pictures for models of your other work most of todays point and shoot cameras will work well. If you want to make big prints you will need to go for a better camera. I would go to the big box stores and find a discontinued model that has the price lowered. It will have most of the features of the new model but will give you a lot more bang for your buck. - Dave

Look for what's called a point and shoot camera. With a limit of $100, your choices will be restricted, but if all you want to do is capture an image to paint, that shouldn't be a problem.
Look at snapsort.com to compare similar cameras, and ask about specific models here before you buy.

Larry, for what you want to do, you do not need a sophisticated camera or quality pictures. Remember that and follow the foregoing advice and you will be fine.
Canon pretty much owns the P&S market. Suggest sticking with that brand for budget purposes. Look for a refurbished model. Lots of choices for your budget.
Hello. I found this gem while researching ideas for one of the businesses I have been developing.53 pages how to photographic art.
http://www.dallasartsrevue.com/resources/How-to-Photo-Art.shtmlA camera for $100 is a very tough issue. Would like to see you with a DSLR with a good prime lens. If you are just shooting for internet display then some point and shoots might work.
The small Sony NEX series might work lowest price I think is
300-500. Good luck

Larry, a camera in that price range will be in the 'point and shoot' style digital. There are some decent small digital's available for around that figure. Canon, GE are two names that come to mind. Keep us posted.

Check out pawn shops Larry, they have very good buy's
Thank you all so very much for your quick, very helpful responses. What a great website!!! I recommended this site to all my art friends.
One thing I didn't mention is that I plan to use the camera to take pictures of my paintings and drawings for online display. So, for drawing (pencil, ink, and pencil/ink, maybe with the addition of faint watercolor washes)pictures, the camera would need to be of high enough quality to show all the lines and the faint colors pretty clearly.
And now I'm realizing that the camera will be a very important purchase. So, I'll take my time in purchasing, and maybe $200, or so, wouldn't be too much to spend.
It'll be about 6 weeks or so before I'm ready to buy. (I need to buy some other art-related stuff first.) And I'll certainly post another topic giving links to the cameras I'm considering buying.
And, as a final important comment: the camera has to be *very, very* straight-forwardly simple to use.
Thanks again for all your help. If you have some other comments related to my comments in this post, please don't hesitate to respond.

In the community where I live, two weeks ago, someone posted a slightly used Canon S100 for $100. That camera new was close to $500. The Canon S series Point and Shoots are an incredible value used in good condition. There were:
S90
S95
S100
S110
S120
They were all close to $500 new.
Shirt pocket and would do an incredible job for the task you describe.
You will like have to purchase Used to get "good" in your budget.
You might try looking at used Point and Shoots on KEH camera which has an excellent reputation and often offers warranty.
Or reconsider your budget and look for a used Canon S series.
Don't think you can beat it for the job you want it to perform.
