Donna, try Googling Lightroom 4.4, it was a free download, a full complete version. Granted it is 4.4 and there has been several updates but it would get you started and familiar with the program at no cost.
Go ahead on with 11, don't recall that much difference in 12, it should serve you fine considering your goals with photography.

Do you know if the Lightroom 4.4 you mentioned is actually free or if it is just a free download trial copy?

I bought the program LR5, I think from Amazon and updated to 5.4, James.

Some suggested that Lightroom is an upgrade from Elements and that Photoshop is an upgrade from Lightroom. Actually that's not even close to true.

Elements has "lite" components of both Lightroom and Photoshop, is a fairly comprehensive program in its own right. Personally I'd strongly recommend Elements for beginners (Lightroom and especially Photoshop can be very intimidating... even overwhelming).

For many people, Lightroom and Photoshop are incomplete without each other. Lightroom is great for folks shooting tens of thousand of images a year (I'm currently editing 4000+ shots taken the past two days) It's a high volume RAW converter, with batch processing capabilities. LR provides excellent cataloging and keywording features, is very good for website maintenance, quickly providing proofs to customers, and similar. But when it comes to image editing and finishing, it's too global and course for a lot of folks.

For finished prints and other high usage of my images, I pass them off to Photoshop. It allows much finer work than is possible in Lightroom. But, Photoshop is not particularly good handling high volume of images, batch processing, cataloging and other things where LR excels.

Lightroom alone is adequate for some people, folks who do minimal image optimization.

And Photoshop alone is perfectly adequate for other folks, especially for people who don't do a really high volume of images and/or who use other cataloging (etc.) softwares.

But both LR and PS are complex and have a fairly steep learning curve. LR is easier than PS.... PS is the grand-daddy of all image editing softwares, I bet even the best of us only ever use 10 or 15% or maybe 25% of all it's able to do.

Elements is much easier to start with and combines the most needed and important features of both. In fact for some folks, it's all they ever really need. But at the very least it's a great way to start out and begin the learning processes without being overwhelmed. And it naturally leads to the more sophisticated softwares, if you ever think you need them.

Actually you don't need to choose right now. Simply get started using Elements and later you can decide if you need PS or LR... or both.

You packed a lot of info in your post, Alan. I look forward to using Elements since I have before, just not for quite a while. I appreciate your response.

Why don't you get back into photography, and stop trolling?

Why don't you find yourself a man - a very ugly one?

He would have to be ugly to associate with you.

You have trolled me, and harassed me, and been hateful and ignorant since I arrived here.

Time for some payback until you learn a lesson by getting some of your own medicine.
