A quick look at lens and body - If both the lens and body have a RED dot- (to line lens up to the body for use-) then they will be totally compatable... For EOS bod and lens...

Got to add to this - I have 2 sigma lenses and 1 canon lens - the canon lens lines up red dot to red dot. The sigmas have a white dot and that will be almost to the top before the lens fits in.

The Canon body will have a red dot AND a white square if it accepts both EF and EF-S lens. Tamron and Sigma lens I have/had have been EF-S mounts.

will a 35mm canon lens fit on a digital canon eos rebel xs?

Canon FD lenses will fit and work automatically on all AE, A, AV, AL. and T series cameras. Also F- 1, FT-B, TL-B, etc. The older FL lenses have the same breech-lock bayonet mount, but do not have full-aperture metering pins for the later A and T series cameras. EOS lenses work only on EOS.

i told you I am a nikonian, i don't know nor have any interest in canon (except the towel and sheet company, or perhaps a 105 mm Howitzer prefearably self propelled!) I passed on what i had read, sorry if the info is wrong! Now don when else was I wrong? At least the camera company i chose has NEVER changed their lens mounts just to inconvience their customers!

Nikon:
Nikkor-F fits Nikon through F-2. Nikkormats, Nikkorex F and Ricoh Singlex (reportedly Mamiya made the Nikkorex F camera for Nikon and possibly also the Singlex models that used the Nikon lens mount.).
Late model Nikon reflexes use AI (Automatic Indexing) instead of the meter-coupling prong to connect to the light meter. AI lenses were made with the prong as well for full backward compatibility.
The Series E Nikon lenses didn't even have the prong, so will fit all models but will not couple to the meter of the early ones.
Early (non-AI) lenses put on late model cameras will usually fit - but try it gently to make sure the rim doesn't bind against the camera's lens mount. Don't put early lenses on an EM, FG, or 4004 or "low-end" AF models.
