So how did I end up buying a Canon 24-105 "L"?

I had been looking at buying an ultra-wide lens for my 7D and it was looking like either the Canon 10-20 or the Tokina 11-16mm (I was leaning heavily towards the Tokina based on many many reviews I'd read). So how did I end up buying a 24-105?

Well, I have one "L" lens - the 70-200 F4L and absolutely love that lens! So, when I ran across a really good deal on a 24-105 "L" lens (a new lens with warranty that was even less $$ than Adorama sells the lens "refurbished") I thought, boy it would be nice to have another quality "L" lens and this one could replace the 28-135 kit lens I have! So, given the price was very good, I decided I can always get the Tokina 11-16 later down the road and this 24-105 will make a great (I hope) every day lens to replace my current everyday lens (the kit lens).

Am I nuts? Maybe, but I can't wait to get my hands on this new L lens and try it out.

Just wondering if anyone else has this lens on a crop-frame? (I know it won't be a real wide angle on a crop camera, but certainly wider than the 28-135 it replaces).

Nuts? No, not at all! Getting that lens on such a great bargain deal would make a lot of people jump at it. It is a very nice lens; you should enjoy it a great deal.

You are not nuts ! - many here on UHH use this lens on crop frame - just so you realize it limitations on the short end ....definitely an upgrade to the 28-135 !

The 24-105L was my first L lens for my T3, and it almost never left my camera. I don't do a lot of wide angle, so it's great for me. Congrats, it's a great lens.

It's a great lens. The two L lenses could be also viewed as an investment if you choose to go full frame in the future. Congratulations!

1) GAS?

2) Yes. But aren't we all, buying lenses with 4 digit price tags? :XD:

3) My last four lenses are full crop and I put them on a DX body, D7100. You do get the sweet spot of the lens.

Basil, congrats on the new lens. I'm sure it will do whatever you ask of it quite well. It's one of Canons workhorses.
The 24-105 was my first purchase when I had my crop camera, but I only used it for a couple months before I had to get a 15-85, as the 24-105's 38mm equivilant was just too narrow for my style of shooting, but your mileage will probably be very different.
Again, congrats and enjoy your new lens, it's one of the best lenses that Canon makes. ;-)

I ended up buying buying a 24x105 when it came came as the "kit" lens with a 6d. I have been very impressed with the quality. Half normal to twice normal is a very useful range. Would primes be better at a given length, sure. Would f2.8 be better in some situations , sure. But, for something that photos life as you experience it, a walk around, hard to beat on a FF. So many lenses, so few $$$.

I have 7 canon lenses in a case! The 24 - 105 stays on the camera body all the time. When I go out that is the pieces I take with me. If telephoto lenses are in the plan I will take 70 - 200 2.8 L with matched 2X converter. Very seldom am I sorry that I did not take the extra weight with me ! I am amazed with the sharp quality from both !!

I just got a 6D with the 24-105mm L and already I can see that it is a fine lens. Now my biggest problem is deciding if I want to keep my EF24-70mm f/4 L II that I got just a few months ago for my 70D. A very nice lens but seems a bit redundant now, especially since I don't know if I will keep the 70D.

It's one of my three workhorses used with my 7D. It's on the body unless the situation calls for super wide angle or long telephoto. Great lens.

If you want it and the kids don't have to starve, why not?

I have it on a 6D most of the time. In my opinion no other lens comes close for the price.
