This started when the Ukraine leadership decided to ally themselves with Russia instead of the EU. The people overthrew the leadership in favor of going with the EU. The area known as Crimea has traditionally been allied with Russia. The people in that region see themselves as Russian. The leadership in Crimea asked Putin for protection from what they saw as an illegal overthrow of their central government. The people of that region voted to rejoin Russia. Civil War plain and simple.
Was the vote in Crimea legal and honest? Are any of our votes totally honest? People are still whining about Al Gore losing Florida. Many believe Obama is trampling our Constitution and violating the law daily. We are not in a position to dictate to another country how they should administer their internal politics. We have our own problems.

Perhaps a reasonable answer to the question that you pose is that if Obama had not displayed such temerity and vacillation in previous official acts we would not have faced the naked aggression which Putin has very casually visited upon Crimea. We are witnessing a historical replay of events of 1937-1940 in the same geographical area. Only the name of the aggressor and appeaser has changed.

Let us look at this in a calm manner. What interests do we have in the Crimea? The Crimea was Russian for some 350 years why not now? It is the home of some 66% of their warm water ports. It is predominantly Russian - settled by Russians and developed by Russians. It was never a part of the Ukraine.
Why should we go to war over the Crimea? Our total trade with all of Russia is about $38 Billion would you go to war over that small amt of money?
The people of the Crimea do not seem upset over the Russians taking over and in fact most seem pleased.
