I'm shooting at f/5.6 also at 300mm. ISO at 400 to 500 and your good to go. These were shot around 3pm.. But they are white birds, they catch the light a lot better than other colors. Also use spot metering.

Fstop, all very nice crisp shots!!! Great job!
Not to be a stickler, but your birds with yellow feet...pretty sure they're Snowy Egrets. You've got a mix here.
;)
Yeah! I just noticed that. 1, 4 and 6 all have black feet. The others have yellow feet. I like all the shots.
FStop, what are the specs on that lens. I have the 55-300mm with F.4.5 to 5.6 kit lens. I guess I'd need a lot of light to get my images THAT sharp.

Good to know. I shot some white swans in late summer-early fall. Didn't even think of the higher ISO. Guess that's why I love UHH. I'm always learning.
Don't forget to try spot metering, I shoot at least 80% of my bird shots this way. 100% with the white ones.

Good. Just updated my Sticky Note on my Desktop.
Used to live in FLA, Delray Beach, with street names like Hummingbird Drive, Cormorant, Egret, etc., but never paid much attention to the actual birds. Now that I live on Long Island, in a community surrounded by water on 3 sides, I see all sorts of birds except eagles. Someone said there was even a pelican (very rare) this far west on L.I. I have some on my website. Oops, it's missing from my signature. Have to fix that.
