I have used my Canon XSI for many years, but would like to move up to a full sensor camera. Is there a full sensor body available under $1500.00 Please advise on what would be a good choice for my next Canon camera. If you have reviews on different models that would help also. Thanks for your help

$1500.00 is close to the price for a new 6D or refurbished 5D MK II (body only on both models). Depending on the lens you currently have, they may or may not work on a full frame body. The EF-S lens work only on the cropped frame camera bodies.

I would seriously consider the Canon 70D, a cropped frame body, that would have many improvements over the XSi.

At KEH this morning using a filter of $1000 to $1600 returns 5 options including 4 1D-series bodies and a few options / ratings for 5D mark II bodies. The question regarding your EF vs EF-S lenses should be a deciding factor if working within a budget.

For reviews on individual models, including the 70D and 6D, try http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ For the older 1D models, see the page on Discontinued models that is linked from the main Canon DSLR Camera Reviews.

Di, I am at the same cross road. The 6 D can had about 1500 USD & I think I saw it as a kit with 27-105 L at about 2 K. EFs lenses can not be used on Canon's FF. Good shooting! J. R.

So lenses are the factor. Here are the lenses in my collection : EF Canon 70-200 IS USM , Canon 70-300 IS USM, Canon EF 100mm macro,Sigma 18mm-250mm can't tell if this is EF or EFS - no marks. EFS lenses Canon include 18mm-55,Canon 55-250mm. So it sounds like I need to stay with cropped or sell my EFS lenses. Thanks for the tips. XSI is still going strong, but need to look soon.

If you want to stay on budget and buy new as opposed to used or refurbished, thenI would suggest the 70D, a cropped sensor. Refurbished, BTW, often means an almost new camera that was purchased and then returned, usually within 30 days, but there is no guarantee that is what you will get. The 6D is an excellent ff but is priced 3-400 over your stated budget, and you also lose the use of 2 of your lenses.

Go to his camera review pages and it will tell you pretty much anything you need to know about all of the current Canons.
Good luck and have fun!

I used an XSI and still do but moved up to a 5D II about a year ago. Just more than $1500 back then but well worth it. Use a 24-70mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm 2.8 lens on both. Didn't get rid of the SXI, generally keep the 70-200 on it for wildlife and use the 5D more for landscapes ports etc.

What, exactly, are you hoping to achieve by getting a "full sensor camera"? Just wondering, because there's more cost to it, than just buying the camera.

Your Sigma 18-250 is a "DC" lens, which means it's crop sensor only, too. So three of your lenses will be unusable on a full frame camera.

Also note that "1D" cameras are not full frame... they are APS-H, which is a larger sensor than in your XSI, but still not 24x36, which is what is considered "full frame".

1Ds cameras are full frame, but may or may not be a sensible "upgrade".

Depending upon what you are expecting or trying to do, you might be better served upgrading to a newer crop camera and putting money into lenses, instead. But without any idea what you are trying to do, it's hard to advise.

You might be able to pick up a 5D Mark II for about that price if your lucky. Or look for a used one.

Do you have a particular reason for wanting FF? Do you believe that it will improve your photos? It probably won't... that's a skill thing and you most likely already have those.

I recently bought a Canon t3i and it's producing wonderful technical quality.

The lenses will be a big deal as already stated.

Good luck

A refurbished 6D can be purchased for that price at B&H, Adorama or Maybe Amazon. I bought mine at that price. It's one of the best Full frame cameras Canon makes. Read Ken Rockwell's report at ken rockwell.com.

AndI always thought Mr. Rockwell was a Nikon Guy. :) :) :)

D, get a used 5dll, they are as low as $1200 used. I've seen then lower with cosmetic problems.
If you want a review, look at "the digital picture", but I've been reviewing mine for 5 years and I would buy it again in a heart-beat.
Some of the new stuff in the price range have some advantages, but few of them will actually produce a better pic, in spite of the new tech. The FF cameras are a great way to store files for the future, even if it doesn't make a lot of difference currently in your shooting. Good luck with your new choices. ;-)

SharpShooter, If you're going to spend that much for a DSLR you might as well get the 6D, it outperforms the 5DII in all respects and shoots in a much lower light in amazing high ISOs with little noise and feels better in your hands. Like I said earlier. I bought mine refurbished at Adorama for 1500.00. Again read .... http://www.kenrockwell.com Report.
