What's the difference between the Series I and the Series II of this lens? I have opportunity to get a Series I version for under $1000. Good deal? Bad deal?
The 24-70 L series f2.8 11 is on my wish list. The series 11 is an upgrade from the series 1.The price $1000. for the series 1 is a very good price . . The only draw back to this lens is it doesn't have image stabilizer.
Neither one has IS right?
I own the V2 and it's sharp as can be. The version 1 is said to be inconsistent and many complained they never found a copy they liked. In my opinion the V1 had slightly better build quality which is evident with the lack of plastic. Flare is well controlled on the V2. Also the version two is said to the highest resolving lenses of its focal range but it also has a crazy expensive price tag of $2300.00.
If you can find a version one for 1000.00 go for it I really hope you're talking about 2.8 ;-)
Correct, neither one has IS but it's up to debate on whether its a necessity in this focal range.

Basil, Canon redesigns a lens about every ten years, and the mkll just came out. It could be a long wait.
For the likes of pro wedding and other indoor event photogs, the mkl has been their workhorse. Just get it!! ;-)

The newer lens (II) is supposed to be sharper. There was a review done months ago on the Canon Rumors site if you go there. As I recall, the difference was be too small to notice to the average persons (certainly mine) eye. I have the first version and it works fine for me. It was a $1500 lens. The newer version is going between $1700 and $2300. Mine is fine, it's a keeper.
If you are using a camera that has micro-adjustment for focusing, you can fine tune the focus and you'll find it is as sharp as they come.
One thing to keep in mind about the older version Canon 24-70 2.8 is that Canon no longer offers support for this lens. So if it needs any type of repair, adjustment, cleaning, or calibration you will have to go with an independent outfit such as Midwest and then hope they have or can get the parts.
I have had this lens for over 15 years and it's a great lens but when mine picked up some fogging inside Canon was no help. I went with Midwest and lucky for me they were able to get the needed parts and shipped the lens back to me looking like new.
You may want to look into the Tamron 24-70mm VC USM. It is the only lens in this range including VC (Tamron talk for IS) I bought this lens and it has become at home on my 7D. Be sure to get the SP version, and it's sharp as a tack. Its a great lens for street photography, and probably weddings, although I wouldn't know about weddings, since I don't shoot weddings.

newer lens is optically superior to the older one. And it is hard to get the old one fixed.
GOOD DEAL. EXTREMELY SHARP LENS. I CANNOT IMAGINE THAT THE PRICE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN THE I AND II WOULD BE WORTH IT, BUT IT IS YOUR MONEY. I HAD BOTH THE 24-70/2.8 L AND THE 24-105/4.0 L LENS AND I FOUND THAT I USED THE 24-105 MORE FOR THE EXTRA REACH ALTHOUGH THE 24-70 IS SHARPER.
My wife has the 24-70 2.8 II and it is an awesome lens. Since no support for the version 1 anymore, I suggest you look into buying the 24-105 4.0 which is under 1K. I use this and love it but I can tell you the 24-70 2.8 II is the real deal and is optically better than the 24-105.

Welcome Basil
There is no IS on both of these lenses as has been said. A filter on the new MK ll is 82mm in size the version 1 is smaller. If I were you I would buy the version 1 that's a very good price. Also if you buy it send in to Canon for tuneup then it be like almost new.
I don't know why some people are saying that Canon no longer supports the 24-70 version I. I live near the Irvine Canon center and they work on anything Canon, quickly and for a reasonable price. There are other Canon repairs centers in the USA and I assume that they are similar.
