Fill Flash Question

I am using a Canon Speed Lite 580EX 11. If I wish to shoot in AV mode and the shutter speed drops below what the flash is capable of should I switch to second curtain or not?

The flash is capable of flashing at any shutter speed.

Do you mean "slips below the sync speed"?

If that's what you mean, then you don't have to change to second curtain, but for people moving in flash pictures where there is a bit of smearing because the shutter is being "drug" (i.e. slowed down) then it looks more logical as the trails will be behind them instead of in front.

FYI: Some folks leave their camera's on 2nd curtain all of the time. At fast shutter speeds it doesn't matter and at slow ones it looks better.

But that's a personal preference.

Thank you. That is exactly what I meant. This will be helpful and I do have a tripod.

What you should probably be more concerned with is that in AV mode as the shutter speed increases beyond the camera to flash sync speed the flash effect will diminish or completely disappear unless the flash/camera combination is capable of and set for high speed sync.

Depending on your Canon camera you can set your shutter speed in Av mode so that the minimum is 1/60 & maximum is the max sync speed of the camera. For how see your manual. You can still use second curtain. This will reduce ghosting which occurs with moving subjects and the camera sets too slow of a shutter speed.

Also setting your exposure compensation at minus one stop or so will slightly darken the background, decrease your shutter speed (faster by one stop) and emphasize your subject.

The flash is capable of flashing at any shutter sp... (show quote)

Shouldn't High Speed sync be used rather than second curtain?

No...just the opposite. HSS is for when you want to shoot at a shutter speed above the sync speed (for getting rid of ambient light for example)

The problem is not clear. Is it incorrect exposure, motion blur or what?

I avoid these problems by setting the camera to manual and the flash on ETTL. That way, the camera uses the flash to get expose properly. The shutter speed is 1/200, the maximal synchronization on my Canon 60D and the aperture is f/8, two stops down from the maximal lens speed. These settings keep out virtually all ambient light so the only light on the scene is from the flash. You can now control the lighting without interference from the ambient lighting.

This Web-site discusses the use of dedicated flash units. You may find it helpful:
