I should have mentioned yesterday that one of the most powerful editing tools for the money is Adobe Elements 10 retail $100 but widely available for less @ Costco etc. It is designed for beginner thru advanced. It doesn't do what the PhotoShop CS5 can, but is $900 ± cheaper. Elements 10 does give layers and masks, content aware erasing, face recognition, good filing system and lots of effects to please amateur photogs. The learning curve easy with tutorials on Adobe web site.
On the other hand using CS5 Extended I'm having trouble getting an elephant picture to speak Swahili clearly.

Amazon has Lightroom 3 "Student and Teacher" edition on sale. What exactly is that? Student and Teacher Edition. I'm not a registered student, but I'm a student of life, student of photography (ya'll are my professors), and I'm always teaching somebody something, even if they don't know it. :)

For the considerable student/teacher discount you'll need a student body card, faculty listing, pay check stub, letter from dean etc. If any doubt get approval from Adobe. You can purchase without qualifying, but you'll not get opening code from Adobe OR a refund from seller.

I like the original, If you can shoot in RAW you will have more info for your post work... However you need a program to work with RAW images.

Thanks for sharing,

I used Paintshop Pro X4 to tone map. This process really brings out the shadows.

Try tone mapping

Looks interesting, but the red is a little too intense for me. Post processing is good, but I want to stay as close to natural as possible, maybe accenting a little here and there. I only have the Canon software that came with the camera and the OLD iPhoto Express . I haven't had time to download and look at GIMP yet. Put in 53 hrs in 4 days. Picassa has been suggested, but that is an "online" editing tool, right? Don't know that I like that.

Since everyone was still playing with your photo I wanted to try something ... I ran it through photo tune to overexpose it .. then added the Orton Effect in perfect photo suite 6
Here is the result ...

Here's a before and after. Canon T3i. Auto setting. 1/60 f5.6 ISO 125. Looking for did rights and did wrongs. Criticism welcome, that's how I'll learn. I'd like to maintain a little more lighting in the foreground, but intensifying the sky destroyed it. Using Canon DPP for post process. Any suggestions?
Next time, take three shots (with a tripod) each shot exposed for one thing then blend the three together. As is, nothing good can come out.
This is different from a HDR because you shoot for specific area vs regular bracketing.

I don't think HDR is required for this one. There is a lot of detain in both the highlights and shadows.

When HDR outdoes what our eyes can do, the result takes on a bizarre cast. That stuff takes great care. When the eye faces a bright light with shadows around, those shadows go even dimmer. I think we deceive ourselves about what we can see sometimes, because we can make a mental composite by shifting our eyes about and accommodate to the changing lighting as we pass over various points of interest.

Removing the hiding aspects of shadows entirely, reminds me of removing the bass elements from a sound recording.

Hi GD
Did a quick one on it, getting ready to go to work :(. I just upped the contrast a little and raised the low tonal's a lot. I will talk with ya later tonight.

I see what you mean about having more detail in the foreground; however, I see the "digitization" seeping through (i.e., the punched-up foreground looks jaggy)
This is why I prefer to limit the amount of post-production in my images.
To each his own, however.

Photogirl and pfredd, Thanks for the lesson. I don't think the Canon DPP supports layers, sounds like I need to find a program that does, when funding gets a little better. Think I'll check out GIMP, seems like someone said it was a freebie?? I'll look it up.

Yes it is here is a link to it.

Also here is a link to Picasa also a free download and it comes with Picnik for editing too.

http://aviary.com this is a good free editing site too
