Absent OP

I'm pretty sure I've read posts on this subject before but do you ever get frustrated and wonder why you bother when an OP asks a question, gets lots of good advice and after a few days they have not asked any followup questions or otherwise acknowledged those that took the time to respond. Personally I think it is a little rude but that doesn't stop me from putting in my 2 cents worth when I think I have something to offer.

Yes, that seems to happen quite often. Sometimes the discussion takes an interesting turn, and if the OP doesn't reappear, the digression can be good. :-)

I have a lot of time on my hands, so I too have pondered this. But then I try to remember that for some, life can get in the way - and perhaps there was a compelling and important reason for their absence :)

Devils advocate here. I think sometimes the OP gets several good answers and then doesn't come back even though the rest of us are still reading and adding info. I also think that sometimes the follow up questions are sometimes asked via PM to a particular person who gave a good answer. Of course I don't know this, but that's what I like to think.

Good point about their having received some answers, so are "done." I used to stop watching my own photo topics after 48 hours or so 'cause I didn't think anyone would be posting comments after that, but later was embarrassed to find out that is often not the case.

I wonder too. I never know when to stop checking on my posts. I keep checking up to a week because I don't want to offend anyone. But the exact opposite happens. I will look at something posted 2 wks ago and not post anything because I figure the OP probably isn't watching anymore. I just hope that all UHH members realize that they aren't getting snubbed if they don't get a response from the OP.

Gary, it's not always only about the OP. If a discussion has gone a few days, there is a lot ground covered. For everybody that actually participates, sometimes there are a thousand who have read it, but not said anything. They, as well as all the participants are all learning. Sometime the very first responder answers it, but the information just can't be turned off!
There is no rule that even says an OP must participate!
Gary, this can go on and then critical-mass itself into a conversation about guns or Nikon vs ......, and even YOU will go away!

Lots of good points here and I agree with all of them.

And, finally, from a casual uhh reader, I don't even know what an OP is, so I don't know if I am offending anyone or not. I rarely submit questions or comments. I just read uhh when I have time, to learn.

I'm guilty of this some of the time at least. I've had good advice that sometimes I follow and sometimes not - but I really should make more effort to acknowledge those that take the time to help me out.

When I help someone out I'm pleased to receive an acknowledgement, but I'm not too upset if I don't get one.

PS - I've always understood OP to be Original Poster, the one that starts the thread off.

I don't think acknowledging comments is as big an issue as acknowledging that the question is interesting enough to read the response. Since we don't know if the OP has left the room or not, a post saying that they are still there is nice.
