New Canon Lens Hood

Just bought a new EF 24-70mm f/4L and noticed a difference in the lens hood that Canon supplies with it. I've purchased several other Canon lenses in the past few months which have all come with lens hoods and my one annoyance has been that they are quite tight fitting and sometimes difficult to put on and take off, since I normally carry the lens with the hood reversed. This new one fits much more loosely. Not sloppy at all but just much smoother and has a positive lock so that it can't shift once installed. You have to depress a button on it to release it. Works great. It interchanges with the hood on my EF 17-40, but aside from being shaped differently, it doesn't lock on that lens. The mount ring on the 24-70 is designed differently, but will accept the non-locking hood from the 17-40. Good idea Canon!

The size and shape of lens hoods are specific to the lens they are designed for. Check to be sure the 24-70 hood works on your 17-40 when set in the 17-24 range as it might be a little narrow and restrict light at the edges of your photos. The reverse might be true when using the 17-40 hood on your 24-70. ;)

I just made the interchange reference to show that the new style mount and old style are interchangable, not to suggest swapping hoods between lens types since they are obviously shaped different.
Thanks for your input.

Didn't think you were planning on doing that but one never knows. BTW, the hood on Nikon pro lenses such as the 24-70 and 70-200 are as you described with a lock. ;)

Then I guess we know where Canon got the idea from! :)

As a Canon guy I feel it's only right to give Nikon a little credit now and then! I don't know this for a fact, but I assume that Nikon has a good idea at least once in a while! They can't possibly copy all their ideas from Canon! (Can they??) :) :)
Eight pages? Heck, we're going for ten!!

Your on! Canon finally gave in and copied Nikons pinch grip lens cap. Though still inferior is was at least a step in the right direction. So there!

OK, I concede! Nikon has superior lens cap and hood technology! Apparently there's just no getting around it! Canon obviously has superior paint though. Those white lenses are just beyond compare! I only have one and I just don't want to get into what it does to me everytime I look at it! Dang! I shouldn't have even mentioned that. The rest of the day is going to be rough until I can get home to it!

I carry my 17-40 and my 24-105 in my pack all the time. So to reduce bulk, I only use the 17-40 hood on both lenses, if I use a hood. I like the interchangeability. So far it has never been a problem. Any hood is better than no hood, if you need one. ;-)

That's a good point. I've noticed that camera bags are like garages- they're never big enough and they continue to accumulate stuff like some sort of black hole!

This may be the best comment I have ever read on the subject.
If I bought a bag that was just perfect for every occasion I would have at least a dozen. As it currently stands I have four and none ever seems to be the right size for the job. I gave up on ever getting the "right" one and now throw whatever I think I'll need in an old pillow case- nearly infinitely expandable. ;)

Think of how much you could carry in a pair of Kim Kardashians stretch pants! On second thought I don't want to think about it!
