You need a LOT more experience than anyone can just tell you on a photo forum...

You won't understand much of it overnight; at first...then it will gradually sink in.

I suggest you buy some books and get to studying...not sure what you know or don't know at this point so I won't be more specific than that.

Setting up a home studio does not mean wanting to be a pro from the get go, more like wanting to learn...

Nothing wrong or extravagant in this request for assistance.

As to asking here (UHH), it is really asking for trouble as the initial reactions show.

Lighting is the most important next step. What flashes do you have, and how will you trigger them?

I'm with Rpavich here. You need to do some self-study to get at least some basics. there are tons of great resources both on the net and from books. Check out Amherst Media for books on all the subjects you mentioned and more. I could answer every question you asked, but you need to take more responsibility for for your education. Come back and ask specific questions after you learn the basics and have some initial experience.
There are all kinds of setups, an infinite number of "settings" and posing could take weeks to discuss.

Deb, welcome to the Hog and happy Valentines Day.
Regardless of what you have, google portrait photography with one light/two lights/three lights etc. google Adorama TV and look at all of their videos that are related to lighting and portraits. There is a wealth of info there. And don't ask here anything you don't understand.
Good luck. ;-)

First welcome to the hog. Some great folks here but you need to be more specific with your questions to get positive feed back.
I actually am starting on the same quest your are with the home studio. I have found a lot of info on YouTube and another web site DIgital photography school. They have a lot of fairly cheap e books a stuff that I find helpful. You can also go to the resources section on here for almost anything.

Good luck and shoot shoot shoot. That's the best way to learn.

This is a good time to check and see if you have a local or state professional photography group the you can join, or at least, attend a convention. They have programs to see that cover topics that are aimed at entry level to seasoned photographers. The trade show lets you see equipment before you buy it and the other suppliers (color labs, framers, etc.) can be helpful also. The shows usually have a print exhibit that you can learn whats new in photography. Good luck.

Check out Creativelive.com. It is one of the best learning sites on the internet today. Warning....it is addictive.
