Recently, with all the wave of new commercials flooding our TV screens due to the Super Bowl and the Olympics, I saw one the other day put out by Nationwide Insurance. During part of the commercial, there was a brief scene of a gentleman taking photos and the camera had one of either two things: a heart-shaped lens (which is what I think it appears to be) or else it might have been a heart-shaped filter on the end of the lens. I've never seen anything like this before....and I've never read anything on UHH about this kind of specialty lens, so I'm asking if anyone has knowledge about what might have been used on this camera in the commercial? Do you think it was a lens that's not real but was manufactured and used to merely emphasize the message of love and concern people should have for their families by purchasing insurance for protection....or do you think or know of specialty lenses that are heart-shaped (and probably some other shapes)? I'm not making this up....the commercial from Nationwide is currently being shown and it even might be somewhere on YouTube for all I know. Please enlighten me. Thanks.
A trick.. remember the period, valentine and all that?
I saw that, it's an advertising gimic.

There are no 'heart-shaped' lenses. But as Bret showed, you CAN make the bokeh heart shaped with a cutout over the end of the lens.
I'm really not sure if its good or tacky
thou with valentines day coming up ...
Yes, I saw it. Everything in the commercial had hearts.
I'll admit, for the brief period I saw it, it did look very real, and I too wondered if it was indeed heart shaped, or just photoshop of some type. ;-)

An old film days trick..I have to confess that I used Heart, and Cupid cut-outs in the odd wedding shots. Just a gimic phase I went through.

Could she talk any faster?!
It has to be fake. Can you imagine what would happen to the light paths with that kind of lens?
