Cricket pitches in New Zealand don't have mesh fences

True. And you can't get that close to either the bowler or the batsman. :-)

To add my dilemma, my grandson's Little League Baseball field is surrounded by a chain link "cage" from first to third base and a very big backstop. I'm sure the Liability Police are happy, and the less than attentive over-communicating moms are spared.

The field primarily faces West, and the games are played in the early evening. The photo challenge is that the chain link is brightly lit. I haven't tried shooting right on the fence. We'll see. I usually use my Canon 75-300 3.5-5.6 IS on a 50D crop or my Tamron 90mm 2.8 for my shots.

What should I expect next Spring with the shiny links with either lens?

Perhaps you could explain to me, and others,........... what is a 'slower f-stop'.? I can guess what you mean, but others might not, and will be searching their cameras and manual hand-books for an explanation.

I miss-typed. It should have been lower. f4 will give less DOF than f8' Sorry for the error. When shooting through mesh a tighter DOF on the subject will lessen chance of seeing the mesh

Many of the lower league backstops have a baseball sized hole in them to get the foul balls back to the ump. These holes are sometime placed just right, and of the perfect size to poke a lens into. Look around for them. Of course if there's already a photog there, ask for a turn. ;-)

Put the lens an inch, or so, from the mesh, and focus on the action beyond. It blurs the mesh out. I did the same with the metal mesh bars at the monkey house in a zoo awhile back. It worked fine...no bars in the images.
