Yeah, I kind of agree about the pic...I was going for a 1970's film camera look. As for the framing, he didn't want me to take his pic at all, that's why he's looking away. Right before I snapped it, he said "C'mon, Dad...really?", lol, so I had to take what I could get.

Don't you just love it when someone bashes you when they have no idea what you were trying to achieve? I had an idea what you were attempting. I have been there. Sometimes I don't like what I was attempting to do but .... so what !!! We all live and learn, well some do .... but others ? I do like your photos though. I think they look great.

Thanks, but I look at it as criticism, and I welcome it, just as I would offer my opinion to someone else. That pic (of my son) was a way different edit than I've ever tried, and I didn't want to do the standard 'sepia' effect. I actually had film burn on it at one point, but figured that was too much, maybe I was wrong. Ii just remember all of those pics from when I was a kid in the 70's, and that's where I was trying to go with it.

...but please, if you have any comments, positive or negative, I'd love to hear them. I haven't been shooting all that long (2 years), and I just started doing some 'more-than-basic' editing recently, so I'm no better than anyone else. I look at criticism as inspiration!

Thanks,

~Ace

I think some folks really overdo the "HDR" look. I think it is a subject to subject thing where a Ho Hum snapshot can really pop. This really comes out in the trailer and warehouses especially the trailer (well done BTW). Personally I don't feel effects work well on people

how was I bashing the OP? I did not say "oh this is rubbish" or anything that was not helpful. I offered open and honest feedback on their image of the young boy.

I pointed out that the background was a little busy and car's driving by are hardly ever a great idea for a portrait. His skin is also not a natural color, normally natural skin tones are what we strive for.

Everyone should strive to improve their photography, close yourself off to feedback and you become stale and stagnant. Isn't learning from each other and improving the reason we are on this forum to start with?

I didn't look at it as bashing, and I appreciate criticism. I know I talked about the pic before, but it wasn't a 'planned portrait', it was a shot off-the-cuff, like street photography, hence the background. The editing, like I said earlier, was an attempt at a 1970's film-camera look. It wasn't a true portrait, so i wanted to edit it to give it a different look. I will admit, though, I haven't done much portrait photography, but I want to get into it very soon. Here are a couple 'planned' portrait shots:
