The files are really too large to be transmitted efficiently. More of a gimmick than a practical feature on a DSLR.
If your are into WIFI get a smart phone.

I have a friend who uses one to send his images to a tablet during a shoot and he likes it.

Think about controlling your camera with your ipod...smart phone...lap top....I think they have an app for that...lol
Camera's today have way too much stuff on them already. I would love to have a new dslr that had all of it's technology put into taking photographs only. Call me crazy!
I love it on my em1, but it's not an entry level camera. The iPad/iPhone app for it is really cool. Nice to be able to do astrophotography from the warmth of my house/car.

My D7100 has optical wireless, i can remote trip the shutter with a $10 gadget. The D800 costs $2000 more and has squat. Go figure.

Well...In some cases I'd agree but not all.
I currently use an Eye Fi card to tether/transmit my "normal" res jpgs to my laptop while shooting so that I can check focus and composition on a decent screen. The transfer takes 2 seconds each shot.
If I am just using the shot for FB or something unimportant, I don't even bother with the raw file....if I am going to edit the raw file, then I download that directly once I've determined what the best shots are.
so yes...it's useful in some situations....
I've looked all over the d800 Bruce, where is that infra- red port located? I see where you can buy a ML-3 port for $150 and add it to the camera.
I tried an eye fi card on the d800. Too slow for the file sizes when set to the biggest size.
Not practical. It might be fine for special cirumstances and studio work. I have the Camranger which uploads to my ipad and iphone but in the field, it does not make sense.
