Crop some off the top; too much open space. Otherwise I love it!

I think the contrast is just about right. It has most of the shades of gray. It has the lightest shade of gray that we call white, and the darkest shade of gray that we call black. Anytime my favorite photographer (W. Eugene Smith) was asked why he made his prints so dark, he just explained that they had all of the shades of gray. And he was correct.

drrj90 - definitely not telling you what to do.

Would you be interested in giving a step-by-step rundown on just how you achieved this picture? Including camera settings, lens and post production?

I'd absolutely love to be able to do what you've done here.

Mike.

I wouldn't touch that marvelous picture with somebody else's 10 foot pole! I'm filled with envy.

The composition is masterful, contrast could not be changed and retain the darker skin textures. Her wrinkles would be dominant no matter what was changed, but the sharpness must be maintained. It's the evidence of reality. Color would have ruined it.

Good on ya, drrj90. Keep it up.

I would suggest that some of the window sill be in the picture for more of a base for the figure to rest upon.

First of all, I like this photo, the impact of the subject is so powerful it pushes me towards portrait. But since it was not presented that way I have the following comments. The content surrounding the subject are parts of parts not lending completeness to the subject, maybe that was the intent and part of the story portrayal. If not I would have widen the shot to include the edge of the shutter on the right and the window sill on the bottom and a small amount of the main structure in both areas to create depth. Lastly the subject needs to be highlighted by darkening all that surrounds. The expression on her face is so thought provoking, very well done.

drrj90 has graciously volunteered the WPC 1352 - Photographer's Choice entry for critique and analysis to find out what they could have done to make it better. Be nice, but be honest as this will help everyone with their craft. Thank you drrj90 and thank you everyone!

I really like this overall it is very impactful and does tell a story, for me there is too much room at the top and the bottom is cropped too tight.

I think that the photo is very compelling, but all the black space over the woman is wasted. Try cropping off the top and it makes it more personal and seems to me to invite the viewer into the womans space.
