Don't get sucked into that this or that top-selling brand is the one for you..you'd just be buying into marketing science rather than using "buyer science" - deciding what you need, and then looking for the brand and model that most fully meets those needs and requirements within your budget. When someone recommnds a brand and model, expect them to explain why!
For example,
I had some specific personal requirements and needs:
A fully articulated LED screen ( a great aid for someone with a bad back and
bad knees)
Live view and live histogram,
High frames-per-second (fps) for birds in flight,
Highly accurate and continuous automatic focus throughout burst exposures, An immobile mirror ( so no mirror slap vibration),
In-body image stabilization ( as opposed to in-lens stabilization that adds to
the price of every lens),
High-quality electronic viewfinder ( I prefer to optical finder)
High-performance sensor (Some brand make their own and some also supply
sensors to other manufacturers as well)
Excellent customer service,
extensive lens choice; large number of high quality prime and zoom lenses
so, based on the above, and the incredible number highest quality prime and zoom lenses made by Minolta and Sony, as well as many Zeiss, Tamron, and Sigma lenses that maintain full automatic focus with the Alpha lens mount, my choice was, clearly, the Sony SLT Alpha series of bodies. I bought he Alpha77 with crop sensor for wildlife/ birds. Then I added the Alpha99 with full-frame sensor for landscapes, general nature, and macro imaging. For my purposes, they are made-to-order for my two main realms of photography!
So, decide your needs and requirements and start from there (not from " My brand is best..well,...it just IS, .So there!"
Olympus, Pentax, Sony, Panasonic, Sigma, and even the oft-touted Canon and Nikon might be found to fill your particular needs, and all have models and lenses that will function to perform more than adequately to fill your needs for the only function you have mentioned, school photography...but there's much more to photography that you may wish to explore!
so, slow down, take a few deep breaths, and start your search rationally!
