My question is, why "should it follow up on its students"? It's faculty taught you the skills as related to photography that you need to have to become a professional photographer. Did you successfully complete each course? Did you develop a well rounded portfolio? Did one or two of your courses relate to how to run a business or work in the photography industry? Did it provide insight on how to relate to people, especially your clients or supervisors? If so, Then you have gained the knowledge to work, and presumably become, a successful member of the photography industry. If not, then you might have a case for being disappointed. College and university students do not expect to have "follow ups", why should you?

Technical skills and knowledge are very important attributes for success. But you also need 10,000 hours of work experience (go to your local library and read Malcom Gladwell's books). And equally important when working with people is to have interpersonal skills. These are skills that can be learned.

Finally, are you trying to make a living in the correct location? For example, it might well be that it will be very hard to start out as a professional photographer in Detroit. Location is another one of the variables you might also consider.

You graduated? Good. Thats it. They dont just hand you a photo business. You get to make this on your own, like the rest of us who do this for a living.

There is no shortcut just because you got a certificate.

Is there anything else to your rant/post? What did you expect to happen upon completion?

I suggest you hit up Craigslist locally and search for Photo Assistant jobs or look to team up with a local events/wedding/portrait and get mentored. Also Join ASMP and start networking. This is a get your boots on the ground kind of career path. Nothing gets handed to you and you will have to work 1000x harder than you probably imagine.

Jimmy, welcome to the Hog. As a professional, your special skills and knowledge of photography should be of benefit to may here on the Hog. There are also fairly frequent inquiries about the NYIP here on the Hog. Hopefully, with your first hand experience, you will be available to assist those that would like to know more about that school. Not many here have the formal training that you have received, that can benefit many.

As far as the school not caring about you, I don't think it's that atypical of any school. I attended what would arguably be one of the most prestigious universities in the world. And upon finishing, I too, did not receive even one phone call from the Chancellor, nothing, NADA!! Truth be known, I'd never even seen the man.
And like you, I'm simply pressing on.

Surprised he finished the class, I have the CD set behind me. Watched the first 2.5 CD's and had trouble staying awake. The presenters seem full of them selves. But the school did contact me a couple of times afterwards, to sell me more. That is what a business should and does do. They, like the super market you buy your bologna from, are not your friends. They are there to provide service and take your money. Welcome to capitalism.
