Yes I thing it would be interesting to see what Russ would do. If interested have a go at it, Russ.

The 1200X800 Pixel file is too small. I only work with Raw or DNG files as a starting point for cutouts. You really need a bigger starting image for cutout work.

I quit modifying others photos a while back. Just not worth the several hours of time to do this on a continual basis. Sadly there is not a lot of information on Color Enhancement on the web. One of the best starter courses for color manipulation was done by Calvin Hollywood on NAPP. This is just a beginner course not really advanced.
That is why I decided to do a series of advanced courses on color enhancement. That is the reason I did the courses on B&W. I just couldn't find a lot of "quality" information on B&W processing.

Regards,

Russ

I have a vertical crop (Portrait) of the plane from a little more than tip-to-tip with a little of the building on the right in frame that I find gives the feeling you are after. I can post it if you like.

I find this interesting how this photo has changed from the original post with all the different and creative perspectives. One can always learn from someone else's work. Thank for your input.

Although I think cropping some of this image is a good idea I think the crop in this is one too tight. The picture has lost some its dynamics.

One of the reasons I think that we're all having problems with the buildings on the right is that they are too sharp. Our eyes get confused. A Gaussian blur applied to the background might help remedy that should the OP want to keep more of the image. Keeping more of the original image adds to the tension within the photo...it's a dangerous job! But as someone said earlier, getting this shot at all is a job well done.

I liked the original, but agree that the buildings were distracting. I like this crop you did. It brings the plane more forward to the eye and the buildings aren't distracting anymore (to me). It's a great shot. Nicely done.

I completely agree. It's worth the work on this photo, and I think blurring that background a bit would do the trick. The plane needs room to move.

Excellent capture of the plane discharging the spray, nice pattern of spray, plane is right at the height for proper coverage with spray, looks to be lifting to match contours of field, planes in focus, minimumal prop blur, appears to be some sort of gas compressor station in back ground, not sure of the buildings.
Congrats on this shot I've tried catching the crop duster in action on our fields and others but always in the wrong place when he flies it seems.
I would be very proud if I had taken this shot.

Instead of a vertical crop, how about a horizontal crop, giving it a panoramic look?

Wow! RMM has just done exactly what I was about to suggest.
When I first saw the photo I felt quite disturbed by something though I immediately liked the shot. I realized what it was that I didn't like. The foreground grass that RMM cropped out looks like a particularly poor and unconvincing cloning job, as if that grass was never there in the first place.
I love the aspect of the plane and the buildings in the r/h background. And the ‘panorama’ look. It really suits the subject.
I’ve added a quickie on the sky – 1 – selected it with ‘Quick Selection ‘ tool and - 2 adjusted with ‘Levels’. I could probably get it finer but I’m running out of time.
Mike

Shot on heavy overcast day, with sun trying to peek out on western horizon. I've tried replacing the sky was one of more interest but nothing I have tried seemed to complement the tone and mood of this image. I realize that the sky is boring, but I am more interested in getting feedback on the composition, along with any other pros or cons in regard to this shot. thank you.

First of all I like your image, my kind of picture. I don't think I will critique your picture but share some of the things that I have learned about shooting aircraft. While they might not work for you they might help.
Your shooting a fast moving object and panning in changing light conditions. Shutter priority works best for me because you can lock your shutter speed and let the camera worry about the quick changing exposure problems.
You handled the prop blur well, if an engine is under power. 1/500 of a second will work, 1/400th is good. First priority is to get a sharp aircraft (fast shutter speed), second job is to get enough prop blur to show that the engine is running. (sometimes a tight line to walk) As for rule of thirds, difficult and sometimes impossible, more important to make sure you have space in front of the aircraft (where it's going) and very little behind it (where it's been). Can usually be handled in PP.

Foreground blur - lines of land with aircraft - action of prop and spray, all lend to a composition that accents the plane. Yes the sky is bland but the lack of clouds pushes the eye to the plane.
The buildings yuck!
