I don't know anything about lighting but you sure have a nice picture there

He's sitting 45 degrees or there about to a window on his left and a fill in flash just above and to his right.

By the catch lights in the eyes it looks like two different colored light sources from photo left, directly at the chest. Not sure if a reflector or another source directly to the mans back. Also you whacked of his ear inside the glasses lens, ear shows outside the glasses but not between cheek and lens frame.

It is all soft light, so I assume there is just one off camera light with softbox of some kind at 45 degrees L triggered by an on camera flash wit flash diverted upward... And please don't tell me I am getting colder... Oh, well this is a great exercise. Wait until one of the pro's here tries or does guess what is the setup. Don't say just yet until someone is right.

I'll bet a couple of the pros took a look and then sneaked away.

This is a great lesson in lighting

OK . . . here's how it was done. Most of you that responded were correct as to the direction of light, but all it was is an on-camera speedlight pointed at a far corner of the room that was returning the light to the subject at about 45 degrees. The flash had my Lite-Scoop on it that prevented any spill of light from the camera angle, kind of like using that "black foamy thingy"
The subject was standing in front of a projection screen at the front of my Photo Club meeting which is why there appears to be light from behind. The purple mentioned was a result of the bloody projector being left on throwing just "white" light.
Thanks for your participation.

Most do not respond from this kind of challenge/question because they just don't know how to "see the light". Obviously all of you do!

The principle used was like that shown in this short video.

I have no idea, WG, but what wonderful game to play for photographers  We need more of this kind of fun here.

I do like the lighting you used, whatever it was. Of course, I know nothing of portraiture. :-)

Right on with seeing the two sets of catch lights. One was a reflection of the far corner of the room (the main light), and the second was that darn projector light that I failed to turn off before shooting. (dah)

Congrats on seeing the two sets of catch lights. One was a reflection of the far corner of the room (the main light), and the second was that projector light. Thanks for pointing out the ear thingy . . . I'll have to take a second look at that.

Glad some of you enjoyed the exercise. It IS a great way to learn lighting!
One of the best practice sessions you can have in any lighting situation is to find an image in which you like the lighting, then after studying it, try to duplicate it. To me the real fun of photography is playing with the light.

I'll find another challenge for you all. Thanks for all of your comments.

I didn't comment, this class is away above me. However, my opinion is valid - an absolutely stunning shot!

Thank you so much. Not a formal portrait . . . just an image I took at a photo club mini workshop on bounce flash.

Was so much fun, you should repeat with some other setup! I loved reading all the "answers" but most of all trying to see the light. Thank you.
