Kathi, just bought that Lumix for my granddaugter who is in the Peace Corps and is in Azerbijan, formerly a part of the Soviet Union. She lost her old Lumix with the Leica lens so sending her the ZS8

Good morning, Tad. Fortunate young woman to have a granddad to send her something meaningful and useful. Please thank her for her service. And, no matter what else I choose the Panasonic is going with me.

Can't go wrong with that, many times I put the little Canon in my pocket and leave the others at home, cause ya never know LOL

What kind of pictures do you take ?? Before choosing a lens or lenses, if I were only taking one or two.... I would look at the images of a similar trip or circumstances and check the meta data. Perhaps go to the extent of noting on paper or making a chart of the focal lengths of all of my pictures. I think that I personally would top out with 90% of my images below 105mm. I am thinking that WIDE & FAST wouild be my advice. Every time I snap on a 70 - 300mm and go for a walk, I regret it.

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions, recommendations, and ideas! A wise friend once told me, "If everyone agrees with your idea, you need to surround yourself with new people." To learn anything, you have to try differently than what you are already doing.
So, here's what I've selected as my travel lens companion...
28-75mm f/2.8. I think this will provide me the best options for varying opportunities without a lot of weight and burdens!
Et encore, merci pour toute votre aide et d'information!

Probably a reasonable choice - - maybe a bit short - - BUT - bet the f/2.8 works just fine - be sure to let us know when you get back !!
