Lens for Travel... what to take?
I have the opportunity to spend a few days over the holidays with friends in Paris. I'm trying to figure out how to travel light and don't want to be encumbered by my full bag. If you had to choose, what would be the absolute lens you would take? I use a Nikon D700 camera body.
Thanks. I have an 85 f/1.8... how do you think it would fare?

Great !!! I think that's a good all purpose walk around lens !
BTW Kathi....I looked at your web site....very nice and uncluttered !!! Did you build it yourself ?

I would take my 18 to 200 mm nikon lens. It does 90+% of the shots I want to take. It will focus to apx 18" so you can do great close up photo (not quit macro but close), and reasonable telephoto shots. Its a great lens for most shots and is not to heavy to carry all day.
I would take my Sigma 18-250. It seems to have the most versatility.

Thanks, Pete. Yes, I sorta built it myself through Vistaprint format. It's a start, but I already see areas that I want to build on.
Most sites I go to are pretty cluttered and have flash and animation all over the place !! Simple is better !!

Don't know your budget, but how about the 28-300? I got one this summer and love it. It went to Oregon in June, did everything I wanted it to. Nice sharpness and good color. Fairly light.

I have to agree with that but I would want that 85 1.8 also.

Yes I took way to many lenses with me. I even had my 2 boys carry some in their carry ons, ha. I used the 28-300 on hikes along with a 17-55. When I got to the house we were staying at I play with the others. Took way to much, but had a blast. The one I had the most fun with was the 10.5, and it stayed in my pocket.

What do you use at home?
Why should Paris be different?
FWIW, I'm mostly perfectly happy with an M9 and one fast lens (35/1.4 Summixux or 50/1.5 C-Sonnar). And I go to Paris reasonably often (it's only 200 miles away).
You might find the bit on my site about travel photography interesting:
http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/travel.html It's somewhat out of date (before digi-Ms came out) but may still be of interest.
Cheers,
R.
