Garryz -

Since the guys here in this thread have been good enough to share all their recommendations with me, I will be happy to pass along how I got those photos (the other guys and gal, I am sure took a smarter path).

(1). With limited funds I decided to try Infrared Photography with a simple Panasonic LUMIX "point-and-shoot" that had been converted to capture only infrared light. I bought it off of eBay for around $275.

(2). I played with it, and posted a few pics on this thread, and Collin, Larry, and several others offered suggestions, the most important being that I download Smart Photo Editor off the Internet. What a great app.

(3). Finally, I purchased locally off Craig's a Canon T2i ( so I could use my arsenal of Canon EF lenses), and had it converted to Infrared with installation of a 650nm filter, after the hot pass filter was removed.

Now I shoot with the T2i, and I am selling the little LUMIX camera.

That's it.

Thanks, again to Collin, Larry, Mike, and all the rest of real pros in here for all the help.

Just got back from shooting with my new Canon T2i to the West of the Ebay/Paypal building just South of the Freeway in Chandler. Off in the distance are the Sierra Estrella Mountains, which run pretty much North and South.

I don't know for sure what it is about that one peak in those mountains that I find so attractive, but there it is.

Thanks, guys, for putting me on to Smart Photo Editor. I will add one more photo to show how it looks coming out of the camera (No Pink!).

David, you are really coming along on the IR--nice images today. I appreciate the information you are passing as well.

How is that done? I would love toy try that some time.

Welcome to UHH and this thread. Most of the images are done in cameras converted to shoot IR. The images are then converted in a program like Kolarivision and then most of us are doing some coloring in SPE or Topaz. I have recently tried an add on filter to my regular camera that is mfg by Polaroid and can be had for approx $25.00 and find it fairly successful. If you are interested in going further, let me know and I will be happy to give more information. Also I would want to know what camera you have and the software you are using.

The first two images are taken using the Polaroid filter and SPE and Topaz for the edit.

Thank you so much, Larry. I have learned so mush in just a shirt time from you and Colin, and the others here in UHH. I feel I have been running in sand as to my learning curve up to now, and you guys have pulled me out of the sand and set me down on the fast track.

Anyone who comes into UHH and spends some time, and really wants to learn, should search the threads and gain everything that is available to them here. They can only come away a better photographer and artist.

Garry.... Here is a good place to start, no matter how you go about shooting IR (infrared) pictures. There are a lot of different conversions that can be made, to certian cameras, to achive various types of color or black & white IR pictures.

If you have more questions after looking at their website, which I'm sure you will, just ask. We'll be glad to help you out.

David... Here is just a simple channel swap with the red and blue channels. Have you ever tried that?

Okay Colin, Mike and Larry -

I went to the Kolarivsion website to see if they had an editor application but I did not find one. All I saw were filters and conversion services.

Time for me to learn the next step. All three of you talk about swapping the red and blue channels. What application do you use to do this; where do I find this application; and how do you do this? Oh yeah, and how much does it cost?

Please don't tell me that if you tell me this you will have to kill me! Grin.

Hi David... There are several photo programs that will let you swap color channels, not sure about the free ones, as I have never used them. I use Zoner Photo Studio, ever since they started, and they are now on Version 16. They have a 30 day free trial, so you can try it before you buy it. Version 16 runs $89.00, but they do run sales every so often for around 50% off or so. You can read about it and even download here... http://www.zoner.com/

Each version of Zoner gets a little harder to learn, as they keep including newer things all the time, but for the money it is really a great program. In my opinion is is much easier to learn than Photoshop. I have several different photo softwares, but I use Zoner more than I do all the others, and that includes Photoshop CS6.

Life Pixel also has various tutorials on channel swapping and other ways to change and replace colors in Photoshop.

Basically all you do in channel mixer, is start out by opening the channel mixer, with the IR picture you want to work on already open. There you will see the Red, Green and blue channels shown. The red channel will show 100%, and the others will be set at 0%, which is the default. Slide the red slider over to 0%, and then slide the blue slider over to 100%. At the top of the channel mixer, change the channel from red to blue. This will show the blue channel at 100%, and all the others at 0%. Slide the blue to 0% and the red slider to 100%, this should give you the colors I did in your picture. Depending on what WB you used the colors will be different when you use the channel mixer.

It really is a lot easier than it sounds....;0) After using the channel mixer you can play with other enhancements to your taste, like hues, saturation, and such. If you have any questions, please give me a holler....

Now I have to kill you.....;0)

Mike
