Hi there, I am an amateur photo bug and I have a question that I would like some feedback on. What is the safest way to download photos to a computer from an SD card? Camera to computer or SD card to computer? Would appreciate any comments. Thx

I have been using card readers for over 10 years - never an issue. You can hook up the camera directly to the computer, but what a pain.

Thx CaptainC. I usually go camera to computer, but it was just a thought. Very seldom do I go card to computer. I guess it is just my preference. I usually can delete the photos right away when I know that they have actually made it to the computer. Thx for the info.

I have used both, but the card reader is less cumbersome. If you use the card reader, I would recommend that you do not format the card via computer. Format it in the camera once the pictures have been downloaded and securely saved.

I've used card readers for years (and still carry one),but now my laptops have sd card slots built in. Just insert the card and import into LR. Nothing could be easier.

Never done camera-to-computer, but maybe some others can confirm what I've heard--that you have to use the battery to download from the camera. To me, not fast or efficient and seems like you'd have to watch your batteries pretty carefully, especially if you are on the road.

yes, downloading from the camera requires that the camera is turned on so you would want to make sure there is plenty of capacity left in the battery to avoid premature shut down. Using card reader (usually built in these days) is best bet. And suggestion to only format in camera is absolutely correct.

Since I started with DSLR in 08, I've been taking the cards out of the camera and inserting into the computers card reader. Never so much as a glitch.
But I do hear that you risk bending a pin in the camera removing and inserting the cards. It's always worked well for me.

True. You risk being attacked by a musk ox when you walk out your door, too. Same odds. :-)

SD card, or in my case CF card, to computer. Then reformat the card in the camera.

I use the card reader built into my PC. When I use my laptop I use a USB card reader.

I almost always do camera to computer, just plug USB cord into camera and it is almost automatic. But, I also remove the card from time to time and slide it into the SD slot on the computer and do it that way.
