From my experience with ducks around public parks it appears to be either a domestic or migratory mallard that has crossed with white and possibly other domestic ducks possibly with some inbreeding thrown in. One time we had ducks on the pond at work and after they inbred for 4 or 5 years the stared getting the punk feather doos that this guy has.

Thanks for your comment, Bill. Nature sure is fascinating isn't it?

Thanks for looking, amy. Love your avatar.
Do you mind if I post pics of a couple of similar looking ducks? Couldn't believe it when I found them.
There are a lot of hybrid ducks around the small lake here. A couple were migratory so they probably had a lot of the mallard genetics.

While visiting with my daughter in Kernersville, NC today, I saw this duck at a lake in a neighborhood park. I've not found it in my Sibley Field Guide. Do any of you birders know what kind it is?
Don't know the name, but beautiful captures!

Doesn't say much for the moral integrity of ducks now does it......I expect to see beak-rings and maybe dreadlocks soon !lol

No, I don't mind at all. I'd love to see them.

Thanks Joyfullee. I appreciate your comment.
I found these ducks on the same day last May. The black duck was with some similar colored ones ... but the others didn't have the "bad hair day". He was next to the shore and I only had the long lens, so I don't have a pic of them all. I believe the curved tail feathers are unique to mallards.
I found the white duck on the same day. I didn't see them again so I really think they were migrating through.
The last pic is one I took last Nov. The coloring is more similar to yours with the white chest. Like mallards, the color of the head depends on how the light hits it. This one had a rich black color to it. It's probably the most striking duck I've seen. I also think he was migrating through.
