I have always shot in JPG only because it has been easiest and most convenient - yes I am probably ignorant. I am now going to step off into RAW format. On of many question becomes what photo editing software would you recommend? Not trying to break the bank but want to use a software that is going to be around.

I have used Snapseed on JPG and found it easy to work with.

Any help provided would be greatly appreciated. I use a D7100, if that matters. Thank you in advance.

I actually recommend two pieces of Software. Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. (I'd love to have regular PS, but wife won't let me mortgage the house to buy it. :) )

Check out a program called RAW THERAPEE. It is free and is pretty easy to use. Very capable program and you can save as a tif file when you are done.

Unfortunately Adobe has decided to move to what it laughingly refers to as a 'cloud based, monthly subscription model' for Photoshop beyond CS6 so anyone not wanting to hang on the pricing policies of Adobe now is limited to Lightroom.

Occasionally I will look for or stumble on lists of differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. So far, I have not found anything that would be significant to a no-professional doing photography. Any of limits I've found in Lightroom like layers and masks are easily offset by using Elements.

Add Premier Elements and you will be hard pressed to find anything you can't do with what comes out of a reasonably current camera.

Corel's Aftershot Pro is a great RAW processing program. I use it all the time. plus it is less expensive than Lightroom
