Just finished up my vacation and last stop was Akron, Ohio, visiting relatives. My wife then took a 4 day bus tour to NYC with her mother. I was kinda bored sitting around so I decided to go out and do some landscape/architectural type photography. I never really did much of it and usually that was as boring as watching paint peeling. I have to say I really got in to it. I photographed the old rubber bowl stadium that will soon be tore down, the goodyear blimp hangar, my wife's grandad's old farm, etc....like i said, I really started to get in to it.

wow....no turn your head, smile, move your arm, take one step this way, open your eyes, etc....

I have to say I was definitely in to it.

Now that i am back home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, i am going to take some nature hikes and photograph some of it's beauty.

It turned out to be a great vacation!

Jim, now you're really flirting with money.
Don't you know? That's how it starts! First, it's a little nature hike. Then a little landscape here and there. Then the things that live IN that landscape. Well, those things are birds. And birds are tiny. They're hard to see, let alone photograph. Ahhhhh, then you think, "if only I had an 800mm lens". Well, those lenses are $10,000, USED!
Oh well, a man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do, and we can't take it with us. SS

Just get a Canon 24mm-1200mm lens!! Sells for less than $400 !!!
Comes permanently mounted to a body!! (SX50)
Can even be pushed out to a 4800mm if you want!! Just gotta be rock steady!!

Wahawk, I think by "rock steady", do you mean a tripod? SS

Hahahaha.......so far birds haven't interested me. If birds interested me, i might as well go back to portrait shooting. Landscape doesn't have to pose.

I think i have all the gear that i need for landscape and architectural.
There's nothing on my want list. I have everything i ever wanted.

Am i doomed? Is there any hope for me?

Jim, nice shots. But be forewarned, that's just how it starts.
Many an innocent portrait photographer has venture into the great outdoors, doe eyed, snapped just "one shot", then the rest was a big whirlwind. Next thing they know, they are walking out the store with a shopping cart with a 1200mm lens in it and no shoes on the kids feet!!! SS

Well, that is the ultimate, but I haven't tried yet. All my SX40 and SX50 shots are hand held. Arms tucked tight to body, lean against something when possible, breathe SLLLOOOOWWWW and steady and slowly press the shutter button, don't punch it. Sometimes lean the camera or my forearms on a car, fence, or other fairly solid object

Do a search here, enter SX50 and look at all the examples, or go to the user profiles of those who use it and look at their posts....

Mine aren't the best, but I don't think they are too bad for an old fart hand-holding it!!

The biggest advantage of landscape photography over portrait work?
Landscapes don't offer opinions or uneducated critiques! (And neither do their relatives or friends).
