Why go out and buy anything but a "point and shoot" camera?
They can shoot great pix. Spend the money on the kids or grand kids. Why have a lens longer than your NOSE?
It all depends what you want to do. If you are a birder you are not going to get a decent photo of a brown wren in the bushes fifty feet away with a p/s or even a good bridge camera. You need more m.p. and a bigger sensor than any p/s has. If you take pictures in low light you will look hard and long for a p/s that will do a good job. If you want to take pictures of the kids birthday party than Kodak Brownie will be just right. It all depends on what you want to do.

Why waste time on an online forum with a bunch of strangers? Go spend the time with your kids or grandkids. :-)

Now mdorm, by nice. He was just asking a question. Maybe he is trying to decide between a Coolpix and a D800.

Yeah, but how does he know how long my nose is? :-) Especially coming from pinokio.

If that is the case then why not just ask *that* question and skip the slightly snarky commentary?

Mdorn, that's pretty funny. But assuming your avatar is a 100% accurate rendition, then it's pretty clear your nose is about 3" long, but still way to short for good birding. But if it's actually 4", then my sincere apologies, my bad!

Horses for courses...I have two PAS cameras (Panasonic) and both are next to useless indoors with flash...not too bad outside in good light though. Useless for birds in flight and longer distance stuff and very easy to miss those action shots as trying to compose a shot using the LCD screen is a pretty slow process compared to using a view finder.
Most have pretty low optical zoom and their digital zooms are next to useless.

It's done wonders for me Doc
I have a point and shoot, and I also have a couple of dslr's and I use them all. My grandkids are also in late high school or college. The last thing they would want is old gramps hanging around all the time, and that is as it should be.

Dang it...made me compare my nose to a Kodak CD33. It's the only one in my collection with a lens shorter than it.
