For dedicated soccer match shoots I take 2 zoom teles (one a 70-200 zoom) and a short zoom, plus a 600. For street walking I like Rollie because people don't realize I'm shooting and so stay relaxed and natural. I also pack a 100-400 zoom for unexpected long shots, and of course a wide angle under 35mm for tight spots. The largest aperture is the best because you never know if you'll have much available light. If you like to shoot flash you can carry electronics, but I like to shoot strictly available light. It is enough work for me to work with camera and lenses (and my Seconic incident light reader for those critical shots that make you work and worry -- or where the subject is too far off to read reflected light well) without having to fuss with flash. I have enough to carry and mesh without adding artificial light. Natural light results in an exposure more pleasing to me too - just personal preference after years of film work.

I carry only 18-135 mm but think one should carry 10-24, 18-105 and 70-300 mm. These can cater for almost all opportunities

Me, I find the fewer lenses I carry the better my photos. Adjust to your surroundings without changing lenses for me gets better results. Most of time I only carry & use my 24-105 and I find when I carry more lenses I look for more places to use them, the less I concentrate on making a really good photo. ( hope that makes sense )

I keep an 18-270mm Tamron on my Nikon D300. It's a great all around lens.

Yep, me too. However, if I'm setting out to do nature photography I always bring my 70-200 mm telephoto zoom and my macro lens with me.

What you shoot will determine the lens to use...obviously ! My all around carry all day lens is the Canon 24-105. The lens pretty much covers all my shooting anywhere!

Oh my! Send me a PM and tell me about that 35mm. I don't want to hijack the thread.

While my bag is never too far away, the lens that stays on is my 17-55mm.

Because I am old and slow an I continue to forget I sometimes just pick a lens and take off.

This forces one to learn to "see" how just one (and I mean one focal length) sees. I highly recommend this practice even if you are young and mentally sharp.

Ditto - although, if any lens is a jack of all trades, it is a master of none - there is always - it seems to me - a perfect lens for a specific picture or story you are trying to capture. The trick is using the right one (and settings of course!)

My wife uses a Sony-STL DSLR with a Sony 18-250mm as
her walk-around system.
