The Tram around Key West is great and gives you some knowledge of the area. Well worth it and gets you off your feet for about a half hour or so. The Glades can be non forgiving. Like others said, repellent, over the ankle shoes and bring plenty of water. I live in Okeechobee and there is a lot to see on the "Big Water"!

Thanks, we are driving. Leaving the small dog at home was not an issue...he got in a tussle with a big dog and is recuperating at the vet. :(
That's quite a drive! My wife and I go up to her sister's house in Columbus GA regularly from here in Ft. Myers and it's about 9 hours, or 11 to Atlanta, so you're probably looking at 14 to 15 hours from NW Georgia to the 'Glades.
Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. It was a whirlwind trip but we did get to see a lot. What no one mentioned was that when you hear hogs when you are taking pictures in the wild you might want to get back in you car as alligators in mating season make that sound!!!! And seriously, who on earth would be brave enough to molest an alligator? And I thought we had the strange folks in Northwest GA! :)
I want to have the camera handy

I still have my shutter button finger
How about posting a lot of pictures of your trip. You were in an area that very few people will visit and yet will miss out on one of the most interesting places on earth.

Will do. It is the first week back to class but as soon as I can get my students all settled in I will post a few pictures.
