Have you come up with a plan or a printer that you are interested in yet?

Mark, I disagree to a point, yes sending out can get you better quality on the large stuff, but being able to manage your own process start to finish has its benefits. A 13x19 on my printer compared to the one I got from the lab - well, in my opinion, you couldn't really tell the difference when you use a good paper. Having a nice printer at home for most is a completely convenience factor - one I was willing to pay for.

Agreed. Obviously, it depends on your needs and expectations. As I said in my original response, FOR ME it didn't really make sense after I did the math. It is true that it did take me awhile to "dial-in" the consistency for those jobs I sent out, but now I'm set. It's also less convenient for me to do my own printing, and my time and energy is better spent capturing and post processing the shot.

Just be aware of the cost of the ink: $254 for a complete set.

Wow... that's pricey. The other thing I experienced when I was doing my own printing is that if I didn't print for a long time (say two months), my ink cartridges would dry out. Perhaps this isn't a problem with higher-end consumer grade printers, but it was very costly for me and my printing needs.

You have all been a tremendous help to me. Reading the reviews on the printers as well. The Pro Epsom R3880 or the Canon Pro 9000 Mark II so far. Taking my time. I can't thank you enough. You have guided me in the right direction.

You will, or already have, gotten several recommendations most based on personal preference.

I prefer Canon Pixma. I'm on my second one and they do an excellent job.

I'm still on my first Pixma...going on 5 years now. It prints up to 8 1/2 x 11 with great results. Good enough for wall display. Love it.

Gina - are you looking at the 3880 because it does a larger sized print than 13x19? Because the R3000 was released after the 3880 and has quite a few more features.... yes, can you tell I like the machine. :-)

3880 still prints larger, carts, are bigger so ink is cheaper, and uses the same ink set. The only real difference I see is the 3000 is wireless ? Does the 3000 have a replaceable waste tray, another reason I stepped up to their pro models. Waste tank fill,I can replace where most of the prosumer printers have to be serviced to have the tray replaced.

Just to throw in my $0.02 worth., I have two Canon printers, an MP560 and an MP990. They only print out at 8" x 10" which I use for group shots and gifts. I also have an HP Office Jet 7000 e809a that prints out at 13" x 19". It makes AMAZING prints for framing, but I'm thinking about getting an Epson that will take roll paper to do bigger enlargements. I use the Epson stylus 3880Pro and I'm very happy with it. As said, it does not support roll-feed (for that you would have to upgrade to the 4900), but you can print up to 38 inches long, which I have done several time (17x38). I love that printer.

I am looking at the Epson 3880 photo printer. There are 3 series. The Designer series comes with a rip software. What is that?
