Obama plans to put Social Security on the
chopping block. I don't know if this is true or
not. I work 50 years to get what little I get.

Nobody can stop him because the brain dead liberals in this country thinks he's doing a fantastic job. The lower this country goes into debt, the higher his approval rating. He's not held accountable for anything he does.

Not to be rude, but you did not work 50 years to get the amount of Social Security that you get.... You got a lot more than the check that you are now receiving... Hopefully you raised a family, bought a home and saved some for retirement, maybe you helped some of your children go through school.... you paid a small percentage of your paychecks into the social security trust fund which in all likelihood will payout to you three to four times what you paid into it... not so bad of an investment.... The facts surrounding Social Security are very simple, when it was conceived as a program there were about 6 workers for every retiree, the retirement age was set at an age that you were statistically not expected to reach.... Now that is all changed, back at inception life expectancy was something like 63 years, now it is something like 78, yet the retirement age remains unchanged, now there are something like 2.8 workers for every retired person, soon there will only be 2.1.... so it is becoming quite the burden.... Social Security is the largest single line on the Federal budget with the largest projected increases in expenses as 10,000 baby boomers retire daily! You are expecting the youth of this country to fund your retirement while you demand no changes be made yet you if you have studied the problem at all should be fully aware that the program with be completely bankrupted by the time they retire.... How selfish of you!!!!!!! What do you have to say to them? That they owe it to you???? They don't owe it to you to somehow keep the promises that they never made to you... It was the government that never made the necessary adjustments to the program to keep it viable, it was the government that spent the excess reserves of the system, it is the government that has managed it to a path of insolvency... Tell me, why do you think that the 20 and 30 somethings of this country owe it to you? It will not be there for them so what makes you so special?

There has to be reform, and voices like yours do not speak with reason but rather with a sense of entitlement and a true lack of understanding of the problem.

Amazing to me that all you, "conservatives" who bitch about entitlements have suddenly woken up when it's yours that is on the line.
I may not agree with Blurry on anything, but at least he's consistent.

That's true, the government made SS what it is today. They also have been saying SS is going to be bankrupt in the near future for the last 40+ years and the government has been talking about reforming it for the last 40+ years. I don't think people are saying SS is an absolute entitlement, just that...if they pay something into it, they should be getting something back. There's a lot of seniors out there who worked all their lives rely on SS as their only income.

I don't see the problem as you do at all. The government has misappropriated and wasted revenue for years. A promise made should be a promise kept. Once again the government screws it up and the taxpayers are asked to bail them out. In the meantime they continue to squander our money on all sorts of non-essential crap and you tell the retired folks to buck up? Nonsense.

I did not say that seniors should be deprived of Social Security, all I said is that when people say "Don't touch it! I paid into it all those years so it is owed to me!" that they are not being realistic nor do they understand the problem facing Social Security. Beyond that they are not considering the burden that has been shifted to the youth of this country.... All one has to do is read the trustee's reports and the CBO's budgets to see for themselves.... It does not matter what people have been saying for the last 40 years, the fact is that Social Security is now being funded through the general fund because the revenues from payroll taxes are not sufficient to meet the annual expenditures, this situation is only going to worsen as the boomers retire and we do not have enough population growth to maintain the ratio of those paying payroll taxes to the retirees that we have had, the ratio keeps going down... It is also true that without reform there will be nothing there for the younger folks paying into the system.... It is simple math, it does not take a genius to read the budgets and census reports... it is there out there for people to do their own research.

Okay so you buy an insurance policy on your home and you pay into it for 10 years for a total of 30,000 and your home worth $200,000.00 burns to the ground and the insurance company gives you the same song and dance you’re spouting, what’s your response? I know apples and oranges but had the government been funding the program all along instead of giving billions to Egypt, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, and on and on we’d have no problem.

Life is not fair especially when the government becomes involved...

And you are talking about apples and oranges, because when you purchase an insurance policy on your home you are paying for a contractually defined benefit in the case of a loss... that is not how Social Security is set up.... Let's look at Stockton California, I don't see too many conservatives saying that those union pensions should be paid out dollar for dollar.... there is hardly any difference in what is happening with Social Security... You can't say that you stand for a balanced budget and then not understand that cuts have to happen.... and as far as all the waste and fraud in government... that too should be addressed and if properly addressed it could mitigate some of the cutting that will have to occur in other programs... but the fact is that the math of Social Security says that the program will not sustain itself on its current course....

I quote from the Board of Trustee's Report...

Quote:
Lawmakers should not delay addressing the long-run financial challenges facing Social Security and Medicare. If they take action sooner rather than later, more options and more time will be available to phase in changes so that the public has adequate time to prepare. Earlier action will also help elected officials minimize adverse impacts on vulnerable populations, including lower-income workers and people already dependent on program benefits.

How much more clearly can it be stated????? Changes to the program are inevitable, and for those who stand up and yell don't touch mine.... You owe it to me... Well all I can say is that I hope that you voted for president Obama because if you voted republican because you think that you stand for fiscal responsibility.... well then you are just a hypocrite... There will be pain in attempting to move towards balanced budgets, pain across all segments of the society... did you just somehow think that pain would only fall on the shoulders of others????

Not reducing our deficits will eventually lead to even more pain for everyone, are we really so naive as to think that it would not effect everyone, did you think that we would only have to kick a few welfare moms off the government dole? Are we really this ill informed?

This country has sacrificed before, during WWII there was rationing of Gas, the government asked folks to grow victory gardens to help feed the nation, people had it hard, women came out of their homes and worked in factories...... I guess that we call them the greatest generation for a reason..... I am sure that they have a name in mind for the generations of today.
