What and briefly why. Thanks
Okay here's why I asked. I dont really hate the terminology but when someone asks me what Id recommend or what I use for a walk around lens I never really know how to respond. Its a little like someone walking up and asking you to recommend a new vehicle. You recommend a sports car only to find out they need a pick-up truck. Ive started a thread asking the question whats YOUR favorite walk around lens? Im curious to see if there is some kind of commonality in what folks perceive as a walk around lens.
Hard to choose. Either my 24-840 (on SX40) or the 24-1200 (on SX50).
I have the opportunity to travel quite a bit so a "walkaround" lens that is flexible from a couple different perspectives is important. I use the Nikkor 18-200 f3.5-5.6 on my D90. I've used it for over three years and it has served me well for literally thousands of images. Using a good tripod, the f3.5 makes little difference at the wide-open end. Bokeh is not a factor as I do not use it for portrait work.

You do a search or look around the posts, if you don't want to answer the question don't.
Pepper, I agree with you that there is no answer to this question that will work for everyone IDEALLY for EVERY situation. When I am not sure what I'll encounter it's my 24-70 2.8. But then I don't really walk around much without a purpose so it could just as well be my 70-200 with or without a teleconverter or 105 macro, or...well, you get the idea. ;)

When I had an APS-C camera, an 18-135mm or 28-135mm was on the camera 90% of the time when I was just trying to be ready for anything. With my 6D, it's the 24-105 f/4 L. When I have specific subjects in mind, or want to force myself to see things differently, I stick on a 50mm or a 135mm prime.
Nikon p510 is always handy
"walks around bridge camera"?

...lol
Anyways I haven't added many lenses to my bag yet but favorite of what I have would be my 70-300. I really want an 18-200!

Wow, now I'm feeling inadequate.
I would say the hubble telescope has a walk around lens but I prefer my 18-200 nikor

Its all about how you use it.
When I was using a crop it was my 15-85.
Now with my FF it's usually my 24-105.
When it gets dark, I break out my 50/1.4.
That said, I'm usually goal oriented and know what I'm after. Often times I've scouted a location out. I always carry my 17-40 and my 70-200 as well.
But when I travel I will shoot serendipitously and use my walk-around till I find something I need to change for.
If I'm doing nature, it's almost always my 100-400.
