Hi Guys, I hope I have learned well from all of you. I've been paying attention. A lot of you have praised the 50mm l.8 lens and got me to drooling over it, but I only have a Canon T3 and didn't want to sink more into the lens than the camera cost with 2 lenses. I finally spotted a refurb. on Adorama for around $150,turned to ask hubby for the credit card and when I turned around it popped up "out of stock". So I have been web crawling ever since and found one at Ryther Camera for $173, new in box, free shipping. It said reg. price $609. Can that be right? I quickly checked the "search" to see what you guys said abt. Ryther and it seems like several of you like them so I grabbed it. Did I do the right thing? I am going to LA end of May and wanted to take the T3 but not all the other stuff and I don't like the pics I get from my point & shoot.

Thanks,st3v3m. I checked Cannon several times and didn't find that page. I guess $609 wasn't really the regular price.Just hope I didn't get totally taken by a mean April Fool's fake!I probably overpaid somewhat, but shipping was free at least.

If you paid by credit card you may be able to deny the charge. You may be able to refuse the package and do the same, but call and find out.

ok cancel the order I found what you purchased. It's the 50mm 1.8 with a bunch of cheap add ons. (UV filter, lens cap keeper, lens pouch and cleaning cloth).

then go to B&H and purchase it from there.

Bug, you can find both the new and refurb at:
http://shop.usa.canon.com
The refurb is at $70.55, I didn't check for the new. It is out of stock but probably come and go very frequently if you could wait a week. I had them call me once when an Item came into stock before it hit the website. Some items move very fast.
Good luck

I got mine at Best Buy for $103 after they did some price checking. The only negative was that they were out and I had to drive to another store to pick it up (although they would have had it shipped to the original store at no extra cost within 48 hours).

Ryther Camera has the same lens for two different prices, one in a "package" and one by itself. Both have the exact same contents:

This one at Ryther is $144.00 for the same lens:

At least call them and get a refund for the difference as both products are the same. Otherwise, Adorama and others are slightly cheaper.

It was the reg. price of $609 that got me. I just thought I was getting better "glass", as I have read here, for just a few dollars more. Surely they can't advertise such a big lie!
Thank you to everybody for helping me out. I can always count on you guys. I'll call them this morning and tell them what I think! Then I'll call the Better Bus. Brueau and let them know!

The list price adervitised by
http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/subCategory_10051_10051_-1_29756
is $125.99. But if you send me $609, I'll send you a couple of brand new ones.

Canon has three lenses in their current lineup with a 50mm focal length.

1) a 50mm, f/1.2 L lens which is widely considered one of the best 50mm examples on the planet. It retails for around $1600.

2) a 50mm f/1.4 lens which occupies the middle of their range. It retails for around $400.

and finally, 3) a 50mm f/1.8 lens, widely known as the "nifty fifty" or the "Plastic fantastic". It has optical qualities that approach the f/1.4 lens above (or in some cases, surpasses them), and retails for around $110. It is cheaply made, but if the dog chews it up, one does not harbor feelings of despondency.

If you bought a Canon 50mm lens for $609, there's one chance in three you got a tremendous deal, and I'd keep my mouth shut about it, but two chances in three that you got stiffed four ways from Sunday, and I'd call right now and cancel the deal.

I misquoted the REG. price listed; it wasn't $609, but actually $690. It's a 1.8. I didn't pay that price, the sale price, which includes the pouch, lens leash, cleaning set. The price I paid was $173. I decided that if the average price is $125 or so I will keep it since it does have the other things, which I know don't sell for much, but they are items I will need anyway. So I have paid a bit more than I should have. I am going to give them a call after it arrives and tell them what I think about that ridiculous advertising, and then call the
B. B.B. and report them, and possibly Canon.
I do appreciate all the advice. Its nice having people looking out for me!
