I agree. Initally, my eye went all over the place before I found the pie.

The overall image seems busy with a number of items that could be the main subject. Maybe just a couple of apples next to the pie would have worked.

Thelight seems harsh and backlit to a degree. Some sort of reflector just below the camera would have front filled and evened up the brightness.

I can't tell from the jpeg, but I am wondering if there is a general loss of focus or the depth of field is exceedingly shallow.

I think the pie, the apples and the rolling pin might also have made a nice arrangement. The rolling pin would create a simple bridge between the raw materials and the finished product. Hard to look at this without wanting a piece of that beautiful pie. Thanks for sharing.

Ok, I have another question. This is directed to everyone who participated today in critiquing my photo. I know I set myself up for this one, but if UHH allowed critiques under entered photos, would you all have been so brutally honest as you were with me today? I came prepared for it, but what of a new person who is not. If this is what would happen to someone that is brand new, I am not sure it is such a good idea. And don't get me wrong. I appreciated all your comments, because I am so ready for all this advice. Some people may not be.

Thank you Bram Boy, for your articulate analysis. Your way with words, your unique style of writing, absolutely astounds me. I'm speechless every time you put something into words.

I'm new to this site and thought you posted your photo to get some honest feedback. It's against my nature to criticize anyone for anything and I'm now sorry I did it. I've learned a lesson here and will never criticize anyone else's work again. My apologies if my comments hurt your feelings. It certainly wasn't my intent.

John, I certainly hope you don't mean that. Your C & C are welcome with me anytime. You have absolutely not hurt my feelings. If my reply to Bram Boy has you worried, it shouldn't. BramBoy likes to go around being particularly spiteful to me, so I let him have it a little this time. Look back at my threads. You will see that I take criticism quite well as long as people stick to critiquing the photography and don't start making personal attacks. Criticism is the life blood of this site. Without honest analysis, how would we get better? However, I did post this 5 months ago, and I have improved since then, so it would be nice to move on to something I've done recently. Did you check out my contest entry? I think my composition and lighting has improved a little since this photo. :-D

I'm seventy years old. One of the guidelines I use in life was taught to me by my parents - 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'. The comments on your post reminded me that I had broken my own rule. I came here to learn, not to teach, so any future comments I offer will be limited to positive reinforcement or questions. Thank you for your reply.
