In another post here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-103720-1.html Bozsik has told you about a DIY diffuser for the built-in flash on a DSLR. His post reminded me about the DIY diffuser that I use, made out of the side of a plastic detergent bottle. I cut the side from one of those frosted-white flat-sided plastic containers and then I cut a hole in the plastic, near the bottom of the reflector just big enough for the nose of my Canon 50mm f/2.5 compact macro lens to fit through, without the need for metal brackets. It's a push fit. I carry the diffuser in the top of my camera bag as it takes no space at all.

Here are some photos of it attached to the 50mm compact macro lens on the 7D, and an example of what it can do.

Well done. I would bet that there are a lot of DIY ideas that our readers have. I would like to see a DIY section added to this group.

We have a page for Macro photography set ups that include lots of DIY homemade flash diffusers. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-3.html
For the longest time I use a frosted plastic Milk Carton cut to fit my built in flash. As with plastic, packing materials the flash still leaves hot spots in close up/macro photography. We/me and some of the hardcore macro folks, have found that a quality paper towel over the end of a homemade diffuser gives the best Soft light available. A softbox if you will for your speedlite. Lots of trail and error went into the process.

Very good Graham, made one already. I always carry coffee filters and a rubber band too. BTW, I did copy your tutorials on SS & A. I gave them to a couple newbies, and they have your name on them for the credits. I thank you for those. They are written with a great talent for comunication. Well done indeed!! Thanks, Boone
